Shared library requesting payment

I’ve been using my free Plex account with my synology nas libraries for years without many issues but just recently attempted to share some libraries with people living nearby.

They created their own account, i shared to the account, plex sent them the email to activate the shared libraries. They can now see my shared libraries in their plex smart phone app but it only lets them watch around 1 minure of anything before requesting a one off payment.

Can anyone tell me definitively what the situation is here because i thought sharing libraries was all still free, or has Plex officially changed that.. or has something just gone wrong with the share process etc?

Plex mobile apps have a one time fee to unlock playback. This is going away in the future with the change over I believe. If they watch on another client than they probably don’t need to pay the fee.

Ah lovely thanks for clarifying that. The friend ive shared to is trying to get it working on his smart tv plex app specifically. Although the shared content seems to be showing on his phone but not on the tv app for some reason

As a side note… that 1-minute restriction is supposed to go away with the upcoming release of the “new Plex experience apps”. With that, Plex will however aim to link remote streaming to either a Plex Pass membership of the server owner, or a “watch pass” for the remote watcher (unless they have a Plex Pass membership of their own).

Mobile (iOS or android phone/tablets) have always had this “pay Plex!” one-time purchase to use them.

There is no such restriction for TV OS clients, so that is another issue unrelated to this new “remote play costs” brouhaha blowing up the forum or this one-time mobile fee (that is going away eventually, but to be replaced with a subscription of a kind).
