Did Something Change With How We Share Our Plex Servers?

I’ve been a Plex Pass member for many years. I’ve shared my Plex server to family and friends before, but I just tried sharing it with my nephew and the app on his Iphone is asking him something I’ve never seen before. He tried playing back some content that I added for him, but he got a “Playback Limit” popup telling him that if he wants to stream to his device, he has to make a one time purchase. I’ve never seen this before. Is this something new?

No it’s not new. If you share your library with someone who has their own Plex account (their own email) they can stream your media freely on devices like a laptop or their TV at home with no limits

The limit is for mobile devices only. Phones and tablets

If had had shared your library before with someone as part of your “Plex home” like a child or someone else who lives in the home that limit doesn’t apply

Unlocking or Activating Plex for iOS
Unlocking or Activating Plex for Android

To add to Jays’ info, the fee is per app store account, applies to all devices using that account, and is not transferrable.

So, if your nephew pays to unlock his iPhone, it would also unlock the app on his iPad if he has one. However, if he had an Android tablet or switches to an Android phone, that would be a separate $5 fee.

It has nothing to do with sharing. Using the Plex app on iOS or Android requires the user to pay a one-time fee to unlock the app.

Yep. Mobile apps (iOS, Android for phones/tablets) are locked behind paywalls. Accounts with a Plex Pass don’t have this restriction. As Ford says, you can pay a one-time fee to unlock Plex for all devices on their respective store permanently.

FYI, using the browser (Safari/Chrome) on the phone/tablet can view the content without any restriction. The UI is more designed for a mouse/keyboard in the browser, but it’s still mostly serviceable for casual viewing.
