Sharing Media - High Quality Help!

Hey,

So I’m new to Plex (to an extent, I have used it before, but don’t know too much about it.) I’m trying to learn, but there is just SO much to it. After reading and reading forums, I’m still having issues with sharing my media.

I’m currently trying to share media (movies) with friends (2 different users) but they are saying that the quality isn’t very good. All media I have is no less than 1080p. When I watch it on my computer via plex, the quality is great, but not for the two users I am sharing.

Can someone explain to me if it is possible to have other users see media in 1080p or just good quality? What settings are required in my account and in the account for those I am sharing with?

My internet is pretty fast, so I believe it should be able to handle this? My internet can go up to 1gbps download speed and 750 mbps upload speed. If you need any other info, let me know.

Thanks for any help, it is much appreciated!

of course it will depend on your bandwidth, but that upload speed should be ok.

You need to make sure that your users have their settings for remote quality set to max.

Which clients are your users using?

This is the thing, by default this is usually set to a lower value in the default settings

thanks for the quick response! Just a couple of questions…

  • How do I determine if my bandwidth is OK?
  • they are using Plex to access the shared media - is that what you are referring to when asking which clients are they using?
  • They have set the default to max, at least I have been told this is the case, I will confirm!

plex clients typically have a default remote limit of 4mbs, so unless your users went into their plex client settings and changed the video to quality to Max, then this will force transcoding and be lower quality than your original.

You might also want to check your server settings and be sure you have not limited remote stream bandwidth/quality.

some of these might be plex pass specific (don’t remember which)

server settings > Plex > settings

  • remote access
    image

and you might also want to check these too

  • network
    image
  • transcoder
    image

with a plex pass, you will also have access to a dashboard showing real time graphs for bandwidth and cpu and memory usages.

finally, you can watch the console logs when (before) someone starts streaming to see why transcoding is taking place;

  • settings > console > type “mde:” in the filter to show why plex is transcoding

I was referring to the app/device, Smart TV, Shield, AppleTV, Web Browser or something else

Thanks for this - great info! I will look into this today and report back and see if there is any difference.

If I purchased a plex pass - would that help with the quality? Or should it be the same with or without a plex pass?

One is using a web browser and one is using an xbox. The one who has an xbox, I had them change the setting within the app on their xbox.

Not sure about the xbox, but in the settings in the web app, the player quality needs to be set to this.

I would make sure you are using the latest release of PMS, currently 1.16.2.1321-ad17d5f9e (I think)

I don’t think a Plex pass would make any difference to quality, although it would allow you to enable hardware transcoding if your system supports it.

But ideally you want your clients/users to direct play your media if possible.

And the other thing I would suggest for the one using a web browser (if they are on Windows or Mac) would be to download the Plex Media Player and use that instead.

The web browser can not direct play as many formats as the Plex Media Player.

Go outside with your smart phone or a laptop and check if your server is accessible ‘directly’ from outside your home network. Because if it’s not, then your friends will only stream at 1 mbps.
