I had the same issue, unable to access external ssd, however is now working. I simply searched Plex in the play store, installed the PMS update from there. It didn’t work immediately but then I went into Settings/Apps of the Shield itself, choose show system apps, scroll to Plex Media Server in that section and choose to Open it. After that all is good again.
I confirmed this by closing PMS that was running in the background and only opening Plex, all shows and movies populate as they should. Hope this helps others!
The major problem is those of us that moved plex storage to an external drive. That’s the library storage, not media storage. If you have anything other than a really small library and no users, the internal storage of the Shield is just way too small to run a Plex server. This is the situation I believe that is causing completely killed servers. Most of us probably also set the transcoder folder to an external location as well but since Plex server won’t even start I don’t think that is the core of the issue.
People who just have some HDD attached to their shield are probably fine just fixing the permission, but for big libraries where we’ve moved the plex data location we’re just screwed right now.
It’s amazing that we still don’t have any word about a fix for this at this point. I’m putting together a mini PC to try to just move on from the Shield now, I’ve just had too many problems every time they update stuff to keep dealing with it unless they have an easy to apply fix ASAP that also includes fixing the fact that prior to this they already broke hardware transcoding on the shield too.
I’m on the beta channel for plex server on the Play store, last I looked there wasn’t anything new even there.
We are still working on a fix. The latest PMS release is to fix another issue, not related to the Shield. I will update here when we have something ready.
I am totaly frustrated.
After all i made a factory reset of the shield.
Then I tried toi nstall the new version of the PMS from the store.
But PMS won`t start. The circle ist spinning arround and freezing.
So i cant finish the instalation.
Hope they will fix the problem soon.
Same problem for me (db on external drive), and i always have a problem when they update the server part, so I disable the auto update for the server and i usually do it manually, making sure the app is off everywhere before launching the upgrade but this time it was a total mess
I reset the Shield and lost accesses to other apps now… well super frustrated too. it is once again going to take lots of time to setup everything from scratch…
I have the feeling that, with the time, PLEX loose stability.
But thanks moviefan.Plex for updating us once something will be ready
I tried this and it seems to be working. I then restarted the shield, and accessed plex thru the regular icon at the start screen, and it’s still going.
I’m crossing my fingers that it keeps working. So my pms and PlexAmp
seems to be running shows and the PlexAmp is streaming thru my iPad now,
Plex movies running on my pc and on my tv screen. Best regards peoples.
I think this works for you because after attaching your external drive to the Shield TV, you formatted. This way Plex can read this drive as “Adopted Storage” and it works (I think multiple people confirmed that having external drive formatted as Adopted Storage works, so that makes sense).
I think people who have their external drives attached to the Shield TV not as “Adopted Storage” are still having the problem with their drive being not found by the Plex.
For example I do not want my external drive to be formatted as “Adopted Storage” because I want to have the ability to disconnect it whenever I want and connect it directly to PC/Mac.
So for me the Plex is still not working and I also cannot write anything to the external drive connected to the Shield TV by accessing it from MacOS.
Same for me, Plex Media Server totally broke down after the update, server not accessible and Plex Media Server section is empty in the Plex app (note: all appllications updated to the last release). The hotfix 9.0+ is not working as well even giving manually the permission in Plex Media Server and Plex apps to access files. For completeness, i’ve the NVidia Shiled TV Pro (2019), PMS is installed on an external USB SSD (not formatted as additional system memory), media contents are on an external USB HDD. I bought the shield just for the integrated PMS…
Blimey….I’ve just checked and any transcoding I’ve been doing must have been software for a while (no hw) showing in the dashboard. How long has that been broken for then? Is it recent.
Same issue for me. Server (external HDD) on a 2019 Shield not accessible after update. Reinstalled PMS but same issue. All other apps seeing the external drive so I’m playing media on VLC! This isn’t good enough and it really needs to be fixed. Could we please have an update on when a permanent fix is due.
looks like a few issues after (bad) Experience 9.0 dropped specially with PMS. Is there any word from Plex or Nvidia or anyone its been like 2 days and nothing?
I feel you, takes 10 hours of my life and the Shield 1 1/2 weeks to index all media from scratch - thats what we get I guess when updates get pushed out every second day with little testing.
And here I am looking at my entire library set as Unwatched again. Lol. Anyone know an easy way to set everything to Watched without clicking each one?
I’m starting to think point 2 is true for me at this point in time. What would you suggest is the best method for running a very large media server that is growing all the time? Building a PC with a large internal drive and fast processor? I am not sure what is the recommended method for a fast Plex server with a lot of content. But I’m starting to think about what I want to move to after this Shield update fail.
Ever since my server came back, the scanner seems to get 'stuck" and is not finding all of the media content on my external hard drive attached to Shield. I have 719 artists, and it is only showing 103. When I scan it gets stuck on Alkaline Trio - From Here to Infirmary, and never seems to move past it. I’m so done with this!
