Anyone else experiencing the issue of your Shield going to sleep while the Plex app is playing music? This just started happening after the most recent large Shield update.
Yes, I’m having the same issue. Can’t say if it was related to an update or not. I checked in the Shield’s screen saver settings and I have the option to “Stay Awake on Music” turned on, but I guess this isn’t applying to Plex.
Also having this issue since the 5.0 experience update. I was hoping the most recent 5.1 update would fix it, but nope. Very annoying, as it’s my primary source for music downstairs. I’m constantly having to babysit it. Not sure if it’s a Nougat thing, or a Plex thing that needs to be addressed.
EDIT: I should note that my Plex server is on a dedicated PC. I’m only using the Shield as my client/player.
I’m having the same issue on my Shield TV (2017). I was getting ready to pull the trigger on a Plex Pass, but music is my primary use and there are too many hiccups still that are preventing me from doing so.
Same issue here…unless I disable the Shield’s ability to automatically turn off without user input for a given amount of time. Since I am prone to leave the basement and forget I left things on (use CEC feature to turn AVR and TV on/off with Shield) I would much rather use the auto turn off feature.
Doesn’t make sense to me to give it the ability to keep the Shield on while watching a two hour movie, but not a half-an-hour of music.
Same issue for me. I use the Plex app on my phone to control Plex on my Shield TV (2017), as I don’t want to turn on the TV just to listen to music. Was so frustrated about the music stopping after 20 minutes. Seems that the setting to keep Shield awake when streaming music doesn’t work with Plex. So now I set the Shield to stay awake for 6 hours, as a workaround.
I originally returned the Shield TV V1 as I felt like a beta tester. V2 is better for sure, but still too many hick ups IMHO.
IE how can the people at Plex not discover this bug? I mean don’t they test playing music for more than 5 minutes or?

Thanks for that added bit of info. Is everyone else having this issue also casting from another device to the Shield. I haven’t been able to recreate the problem playing directly from the Shield. I haven’t tested casting from my phone to the Shield.
I’m not sure what you mean by “casting”, but I’m not using the internal storage of the Nvidia Shield. My music is on a NAS running PMS. I too am suffering from a sleepy Shield while playing music (hosted on my NAS). The only media player running is on the Shield, so I’m not sure I’d say I was “casting”, but the music is stored elsewhere on the LAN.
I was able to recreate the issue by casting an audio book to the Shield. After about 20 minutes, the Shield went to sleep. I’ve filed the issue internally for the devs to investigate.
If you are seeing the Shield go to sleep and you are not casting, please let me know and provide me the logs from the app.

Welcome to the forums. Casting is when you use another Plex client like your phone and use it to control playback to another Plex client like the Shield. It doesn’t matter where your music is stored. Please provide me the logs from the app. See my signature for a link to instructions on how to get the log if you are not sure how.
The bug also happen without casting. I’ll try to gather some logs
I confirm, It also happen without casting. Sleep timeout is 1 hour on my Shield and music stops after one hour…
One remark by the way : could we have the current timecode position displayed when playing music in addition to title/album/artist/art ?
I am having the same issue–using the Plex app on Shield (as a client, not server) and NOT casting. I just got my Shield two days ago though so not sure how to collect a log yet.
Still broken with version 5.10
Same issue here as well.
Still happening… This is really annoying! Has there been any traction on this issue? I hate having to babysit this thing all weekend when trying to listen to music on Plex. Using NVIDIA Shield TV as Plex client only.
Nothing that I’m aware of. Still happening to me too. Makes it pretty useless to use for music, unless you only want to listen to a specific song.
I’m having this same issue. I’m using a computer to act as the server for the music. It’s not the problem. The shield just seems to ignore the option in “Screen Saver” called something like “Keep screen on while listening to music”. Unfortunate.
Could this issue be linked to this one: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/231632/music-playback-stopping/
Symptoms are different on mobile & TV, but cause could be similar
I have the exact same symptoms.
An interesting fact is that there is no screen saver. I can see the Plex screen until the Shield going to sleep.
It also seems that the current song is not cut. The song plays and when it should play the next one, the Shield goes to sleep.
I also was considering buying a pass at first. But the more I use Plex on the Shield, the more I am disappointed.
I’m surprised no one from Plex has chimed in. In this case I think the Shield is more to blame than Plex though.
It would be nice if someone from the Plex Team would comment on why this happens…if they can create a workaround…or it’s a Shield issue we’re going to have to wait for Nvidia to fix. So far nothing but crickets in the background…
Folks have been complaining about this issue since at least 2015:

Seems no one from Plex or Nvidia want to talk about it.
