No audio when playing music on Nvidia Shield

Server Version#: 1.16.5.1554
Player Version#: 7.21.0.12323
Nvidia Shield [2015]#: 8.0.0[32.5.205.42]

My setup is a Shield connected to tv via HDMI and the tv outputs to a 2.1 soundbar via optical cable.

I frequently get no audio when trying to play a song, album, etc from Plex. I see the see the player ticking away at the seconds, but there is no audio. The Shield wasn’t sleeping before this. I’ve tried stopping/starting the song, switching songs and force closing Plex. But the issue persists most of the time. Sometimes I get lucky and the music plays. I’ve rebooted and sometimes the issue is temporarily fixed and sometimes not.

It’s frustrating as I’ve had this issue in the past with version 7.0 of the Shield, but it was minimal after various Plex and Shield updates (not sure where the fault lies). Now it’s back with a vengeance and sadly makes Plex for music virtually unusable.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter or similar experiences?

Thanks!

There have been a couple other reports of this, and I’m experiencing it too. I think the consensus is that it’s a problem with the latest Shield firmware.

As far as I am aware there is no such consensus. There is no indication that this issue affects anything but the new Plex Android TV app. FWIW, similar issues are being experienced by Smart TV users.

Same here. Plex is basically unusable for audio, which is what I’m using my Shield for 75% of the time. It’s keeping me stuck in a lossy Spotify world… A solution to this problem would be really really nice.

Exactly the same symptoms using Plex to play music from the Synology drive on my Shield TV. Only started recently. Version 7.21.0.12323 (a3621a18)

Update as of 9/18…

I opened a case on the Nvidia Shield site and their advice was to reset the Shield. I begrudgingly performed the reset about 5 days ago and so far so good. Obviously I need to keep testing, but I am hopeful.

If any of you are brave enough to try the “reset” option please add your results to this thread.

Take care!

What’s the fix?

theres another posts here on the forum with the same issue, and are not using a SHIELD but a sony android tv…

I’ve started another thread with what looks like the same issue. I’ve managed to be able to repeat it across 3 x shields. Can any of you see if you are having the same problem.

Any news on a fix for this?
I have the same issue regardless of whether I am playing music via Plex app on my shield, or the plex app on my Sony Android TV…

If I use Kodi everything works…just not Plex!

Just an update…

It’s been a month now since I reset my Shield and Plex is playing music without issue.

Take care!

I’ve tried resetting to no avail.
The problem continues with Shield Firmware 8.0.1, Plex Android 7.2.3, and server 1.18.*.

I find that a force stop and reopen of the Plex app fixes the problem temporarily.

Well after almost two months of problem-free playback I once again am experiencing no audio regularly when trying to play music. I am forced to force close Plex and restart it. After that I can play music for the day. And then it happens again… force close, restart, repeat. Ugh.

Has Plex acknowledged the issue or are our complaints just falling upon deaf ears?

I am having the same issue as above with Nvidia Shield using Plex Media Server and trying to play music through Tidal integration. Restarting shield as well as forcing close Plex temporarily fixes the issue.

i was one of those people, sadly it is not the case currently and doesnt appear to be any fix coming for anytime soon, much to my disappointment as this has been a problem nearly 3 months now

still no fix or the cause identified it seems.

the need to restart the app on the nvidia shield takes away from the whole experience, i think i’ll just go and use volumio for my audio using a RPi and external DAC.

Same issue as others here, on the Nvidia Shield Pro tv.

i did a rage quit on this one, deleted music from PMS and deleted the music from my HDD.

3 months is my limit

therefore i have now permantly solved this music issue

This is an issue for me now with tidal worked yesterday fine now nothing should not take 3 months to resolve a stop ship bug like this. Any updates from Plex on this.
