Plex has no music audio after waking Shield TV

Server Version#: 1.16.5.1554
Player Version#: 7.20.0
Logs: logging.txt (1.0 MB)

After booting the Nvidia Shield TV I can play music with audio through Plex just fine. This includes MP3 and FLAC files. However, after waking the Shield from sleep, Plex will have no audio while playing music. All other sounds seem to work: menu sounds, theme music, even movies and TV shows. Just no music audio.

If I reboot the Shield the audio will be restored. I have also found that by force closing and restarting the Plex app, audio is restored most of the time.

I can reproduce this issue whether I am using a USB DAC or HDMI for audio output (HDMI is always connected for video).

In the Plex app I have pass-through set to “disabled”. In the Shield settings I have available formats set to “none: never use surround sound”. I’ve tried every combination of Plex and Sheild audio settings I could come up with, to no avail.

The attached logs are from a session where the issue was reproduced. All tracks played except the last one had no audio.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What version of the Shield firmware are you running. I’m still on the old and can’t reproduce this issue.

FYI - I never turn off my Shield so it’s always waking from sleep.

I can’t check now, but I know it is >= 7.2 since certain newer features are available to me.

I am not entirely sure that it is related to a sleep/wake cycle, but that seems to be a consistent way to reproduce it. The fact that someone else has the same issue with standby on their Smart TV seems not incidental.

The Shield is new to me, so unfortunately I don’t have a comparison to older firmwares or Plex versions.

Let me know how I can help debug.

I have been experiencing the same issue. I’m on the most current stable Shield firmware. I have pass-through enabled. With mine sound will be fine watching movies and TV shows and then when I switch to trying to play music there will be no sound unless I reboot my Shield. I also get a message on my television just before the music starts saying sound is rerouted to the television speakers even though a) my television speakers are disabled, b) my receiver is set to only output sound through the Amp (not TV and Amp) and c) my television shows that sound is being output through the Amp and not the TV speakers.

This only happens with music in the Plex app–not with movies or TV shows in the Plex app or with any other Shield apps.

I replaced my HDMI cable and have been playing with various settings on my Shield, TV, Amp and in the Plex app but it continues to happen.

@anon18523487 my Shield device is at version 8.0.0.

Thanks for the help!

When this happens do you still have menu sounds and sounds in other apps?

The menu sounds aren’t consistent but when music is playing with no sound in the Plex Amp I can stop the song, start playing a movie and the movie will have normal sound. But if I stop the movie and try playing music again there’s still no sound unless I reboot my Nvidia Shield. Menu sounds seem to be inconsistent across all apps–sometimes I hear them and sometimes not but even when there are no menu sounds other sound within apps is normal except for music in Plex.

@anon18523487 Please, what else is required for a developer to look into this issue? I am happy to help.

I seem to be having the same issues.

Shield version 8.0.0(32.5.205.42)
Plex app version 7.20.0.11992(a0514e20)

No audio on music (MP3). Movies, TV shows, menu sounds all work fine. Reboot of the shield fixes issue until the shield sleeps again. (Sleeps when TV is off or switched to OTA).

FWIW - Direct HDMI connection to the TV. Swapped cables no change. Manipulated audio settings no change. Not noticing any issues on other Shield apps.

I will gladly help trouble shoot things if there are settings or configs that need to be tested.

This does seem to be linked to the Plex waking from sleep. Every morning when I get up and turn on my Nvidia Shield I have to reboot it to get sound while playing music n the Plex app. While the Nvidia is on even if its for many hours and even if I switch among apps I don’t need to reboot again. But in the morning when I get out of bed it’s been the same every day–I need to reboot the Shield or no music in Plex while system sounds and sounds from video are unaffected.

to fix you dont have to reboot the SHIELD FYI, just force close the plex app and reopen

@anon18523487 do you have yet any insight to provide?

Ugh. Same issue here. Major pain in the butt.

The devs are working with some of our ninjas to identify the problem. No other news at this time.

Same issue here with Shield on latest firmware. Once I wake up the shield from sleep it won’t play any audio from my music collection but plays audio from all my film collection.

Rebooting the shield brings audio back to my music collection. I will try forcing Plex app to close next time to see if that also fixes the music audio.

Also experiencing this. Force closing does seem to restore audio.

Ditto, been having this problem, once I restart Plex on the shield, I can play music. But once it stops playing an album or what-not, more often than not, I have to restart it again in order for me to play other music.

I’ve been experiencing this since the 8.0 upgrade with the same symptoms: Movies will play, MP3, AAC, and 5.1 FLAC will not–anything under music. I’m so relieved that other people have been seeing the same things so that Trumpy81 doesn’t emerge to tell me it’s something I’ve done with my settings like he usually does.

Exact same here. Latest stable updates on Shield and Plex app. HDMI passthru to AVR. No audio on music until I reboot or force quit app. Movies and tv are fine.

Same issue.
