Shield TV 2019 - Lagging with PLEX during 4K direct play

Hi,

whenever I try to play 4K content via PLEX, the stream starts lagging during a more demanding scenes (fast paced action sequences, and so on).

When I try to pause the movie (or do to anything at all) the entire Nvidia Shield starts severely lagging, and not even responding to any input via the remote. It will not react even to the Home Button right away, but it takes around 20 - 30 seconds before the Plex will even get to the Home Screen.

Do you have any clue how to solve this? I have purchased Shield specifically so I could play 4K movies over my network.

Since the entire Shield is lagging, I must assume that this is the Shield’s fault, and not PLEX fault. It looks like it runs out of RAM or something like that.

I have already ruled out the network issues, because I have a gigabit network at home, and Shield correctly identifies the network as gigabit. Also, in my opinion, if it was a network fault, then only the movie would lag, but as I said, when I have this issue, the entire Shield is lagging.

I have also verified that the movies are Direct Playing

My server is a high end PC, so there is definitely no HW bottleneck.

If you have the tube version, I recommend PKC (PlexKodiConnect) on Kodi for all 4k playback. This is different than the official Plex for Kodi plugin and will require some configuration to make it user friendly. If you want to use the official Plex app, then unfortunately you’ll need the Shield 2019 Pro model.

I have googled in the meantime, and found the official Plex for Kodi. I have try to play the movie, and it has worked without any issues.

This is completely ridiculous… I have bought Shield TV exactly for 4K movies, because my Smart TV’s app was not able to keep up HW wise, and then I see this horrible state of the Plex App for Android TV…

Since it’s working fine on Kodi, it’s clearly not an HW issue…

Anyway, what is the difference between PKC and official Plex plugin for KODI? What are the benefits?

So I have tried both PKC and Plex plugin, and I have found out that with PKC the Shield starts lagging as well, but not with Plex plugin.

I don’t know if Plex will work smoothly one day with 4k content… it’s a shame because all other apps are managing it perfectly! Don’t know what the devs are doing.

True, I have never encountered an adequately optimized Plex app.

But I’m glad that I got it working relatively fine via the Kodi plugin.

More busy with taking money and “implementing “ junk instead of fixing issue’s like the 4K playback on a shield tube for example
