Plex on Nvidia Shield TV 2019 (Tube) 4K HDR lag, crash, restart

I just got the Nvidia Shield TV 2019 (Tube). I’m connected via 5ghz Wifi (average 450 mb/s) in my basement and the a lot of lag and even the app crashes and restarts when trying to stream 4k HDR.

I tried uninstalling the app, factory reset the shield. Nothing helps. I’m doing the exact same thing on my Apple TV 4K with no issues.

I know this has been an ongoing topic in other threads but there’s been no news since this thing launched and that doesn’t make sense.

How come no fix was made for this issue since the launch date? Is it a limitation of the 2gb of RAM on it?

I wanted to open a new thread because all the other ones are so old and buried in this forum.

And yes i’m fully aware that I won’t have these issues with the pro version but I paid half the price for the regular tube and i really thought i could enjoy it.

I could send the logs, which has been done over and over again in other threads. I really doubt that you guys can’t reproduce the issues since so many people have had the exact same problem.

Thanks,

As mentioned on other threads, sign up for the beta program to receive latest updates.

Alternately, return it and use something else (ATV, Roku, etc) or buy the Shield Pro (or look for a used pre-2019 model on ebay, etc).

Do yourself a favor and return it for the Pro version if that’s a possibility :).
The Tube is limited with a lot of things because of the lower spec.

Hopefully the PLEX team will be able to craft something out for the Tube owners.
Best of luck.

WiFi and 4k HDR would be too much gamble for me. Hardwire it.

FYI, new beta release out today to help with low memory devices. You might monitor the other threads to see if it helps with the Shield Tube (Plex Pass required to get beta releases).

“A lot of things” only really being the ability to multitask while having a Plex Server right on the Shield itself, and this playback bug for 4k files only in Plex (the same files work fine with VLC if you just enable DLNA server) so it’s not the hardware… but of course you have tons of experience with the tube model, so please enlighten us on a “a lot of things”, please, I need my FOMO covered!

Way to go with that condescending attitude, i can already tell you have a lot of friends.
IDK about you but i’ve put the shield through other tasks such as gaming / emulating games and in some cases it barely makes it through ( easy example, play asphalt 9 for a while, you’ll understand).
Based on that alone, it’s not a wild assumption to have that the tube version would do worse.

Sorry, but with internet anonymity I’m going to call people out for talking trash, I wasn’t trying to be condescending, just try posting with some actual substance if you don’t like being called out for regurgitating the hive-mind hate talking points on the tube version…

But my point is, the absolutely only things you can’t do on it is run a Plex Server from it directly or run 64-bit emulators, so if that’s your purpose for a Shield, then definitely get the Pro… but with DLNA server on, all files work just fine through Kodi or VLC Player and these latest Beta’s have fixed this issue with Plex anyway, so now it’s safe to use a tube for other than those 2 items above.

Have you tried the new update yet? Likely not WiFi issue at all, but needs this latest Beta to fix the issue with the Plex app, these files have always played fine with Kodi or VLC and now the latest Beta works great!

Wished they processed beta sign ups faster. I’m looking forward to trying this update on my tube.

you can download the beta apk and install it directly

Can I add that I too have issues when playing UHD HDR content through the plex app. I’m using the nvidia shield 2019 (tube). The app crashes constantly and oddly enough the shields remote won’t work after the crash. But I have no issues playing the content via my plex server but using the third party player XPlay. I have also created a library in Kodi to test and that too has no issues.

Plex for Android tv: 7.30.2.16712
Server: 1.19.1.2645

Yeah, I just recently got a few Shield 2019 tubes and can confirm that this issue is happening on UHD HDR content for me as well. It’s connected locally via gigabit hardwire.

Server: 1.19.1.2645
Plex for Android TV: 7.31.0.16802

I’m using the android tv app 7.31
My problems are resolved except for the high bit rate (120 Mpbs) files.
For the others issues all has be resolved.
Bye

Still the same for me also fith the 8+ version of the app. With 4k files its very laggy, and very often the app then restarts itself and the remote stops working for some time. Have then to switch to the receiver remote which is connected over CEC until the shield remote starts working again…

Having the same problem, there is an open thread on the nvidia geforce forums where nvidia officials state that the “plex app memory footprint has gotten away from them” and that they’re trying to work with plex to fix it. But my tube shield is practically useless at this point, too many crashes on almost all videos.

I got very excited at the patch note “Player: reduce memory requirements for playing high bitrate content.” in v8.1.0.17650-beta that came out today.

Just updated one of my Shield tubes and tested, unfortunately still having massive playback issues playing a 4K HDR file with bitrate in the mid 50Mbps range.

New beta didn’t fix it for me either. Still stuttering and crashing, even with the old player. At least the plex team is engaged with us on one of the other threads. Hoping we can make some progress soon.

What’s the other thread?

Don’t worry about the fact the title is Shield Pro. The dev is actually talking about the tube specifically there too. Last 2 days of posts have been interesting for sure.
