Shield tv don't hw transcode

Fun fact is that Plex employee confirmed that the fix was for Android 9 version, not the new one.
Who needs a fix for the version which is not used any more and we were forced to upgrade?

Ok, well I am still on Android 9 with Version 1.26.0.5715. I enabled hardware acceleration to test. Shockingly HW transcoding does work.

Less than a month after I bought the shield exclusively for PMS with HW transcoding I got the infamous update V9 :’(

There is a small issue if you have tone mapping enabled. However, the Shield can perform tone mapping itself so as a work-around for now you can turn this off in PMS.

Anyone can confirm that this beta fix the issue? I’m still in nvidia experience 8.3.2 and waiting for a fix for such a long time.

@blackzwe thanks for replying it. I was already subscribed to beta. After I rebooted the update came. But it didn’t work for me.

@anon18523487 I tried with my old Roku 3 that I know it will force transcode. It stalls at 33% for a while and then an error playback message appears.

@njweb I think your issue has to due with tone mapping not working right now. Since the Roku 3 does not support 4k or HDR, PMS needs to transcode to 1080p SDR. Right now, tone mapping isn’t working. If you turn off that option, you will get a 1080p 10-bit video, but the Roku 3 doesn’t support that either. Right now you are stuck when using that Roku 3 until we can get tone mapping working.

The movies (files) that I tried to play didn’t have HDR. They are 1080p HEVC SDR 10bit. Must be something else going on.

If you turn off that option, you will get a 1080p 10-bit video, but the Roku 3 doesn’t support that either.

Hi, he was pointing out that PMS should and would normally transcode 1080p 10bit to 8bit for the Roku but it isn’t.

With the problems people are having with non android devices I think it is safe to say it isn’t fixed, how long has it been now? 5monhs?

Transcoding (hevc 10-bit to h264 10-bit) works, tone mapping (10-bit to 8-bit) is broken. Web can play 10-bit videos. It just might look awful.

I just discovered that two beta versions were released since I last posted here.

The thing is I haven’t received any. I’m already in the beta test program. Received the first version 1.27.0.5849. But nothing else since.

Any tips?

Betas not appearing for me either. I think they take longer to appear for the shield which sucks.
