That’s correct @martintzonev . Read this and scroll down to the “Special Devices” section.
You do understand that the big server problem is with Nvidia, and not Plex, right? Sure, angry, but be angry with Nvidia. Get money back for your Shield. And yeah, the update has transcoding now with Plex, but this is really the first issue that Plex has had regarding Shield since Nvidia borked it.
I am not entirely sure that this is an NVIDIA issue after the 9.0.1 hotfix. Seems to be something that Plex has to work on as well.
There is a known issue with transcoding, and Plex is working on it. I was specifically replying to the user who was complaining about Nvidia Shields acting as a Plex Media Server, which is/was(?) completely Nvidia’s fault. The transcoding issue is a completely different issue, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were related to the update to Experience 9.
Hey, wondering if there is any workaround for this? Been waiting for a very long time and I use my plex server to stream a lot remotely. It has now become impossible because it’s constantly buffering.
Is there a setting which can help me boost performance while we wait for a fix.
Not really. What I did when I had underpowered servers and clients was to simply transcode everything I wanted into playable formats. but Nvidia keeps tweaking their Shield software (3 hotfixes now, I think), and we can’t really say how that has affected PMS for transcoding.
I’m guessing part of the issue I’m having here Transcoding on iPad Mini 4 / direct plays on iPad 8th Gen is due to the transcoding problem. When it did transcode in the past it used to show (hw) next to it, now it doesn’t.
In my PMS 1.24.x it shows HW transcode, but it takes like 2 minutes of buffering to play 2 seconds of movie when playing 4k h.265. Lower res h.265 has no issue transcoding in real time.
I still have a hunch v1.23 didn’t have that problem, but I haven’t tested the theory yet.
Is it possible to downgrade to PMS 1.23 without too much grief?
Just watching my wife try and stream something on the iPad upstairs and on the Plex dashboard it’s switching from SD (H264) - transcode to Direct Stream to 1080p (H264) - transcode and buffering occasionally. The source file is 1080p (HEVC Main 10).
I think so, by backing up the plex folder and restoring it after downgrading the version. Haven’t tried it yet though.
It’s unclear to me if the DB schema changed between any of the versions that would make a newer Plex DB be incompatible with an older PMS version.
One of these weeks I’ll find the time to test.
Is there any progress on this?
With last version of the shield (v9) I tried PMS version 1.25 (no HW), 1.24 (still no HW) and 1.23 (can’t setup server, infinite spinning when creating server for the first time). None of them worked.
So either you can downgrade the version of your shield or you have to wait for a fix… :\
Don’t know if it’s related to this issue, but I’ll chime in. Content in H265 with srt sub gets software transcoded to H264 with ass subtitles. It doesn’t make much sense to me.
Still not fixed.
Any idea if there is a fix on the way?
Tried to downgrade NVIDIA experience to 8.2.3 (not sure about PLEX version there) and HW transcoding came back, but NETFLIX does not work on the old version any more. Is it something with Android 11 that prevents HW transcode to work properly?
I downgraded to experience 8.2.3 and then turned off auto-updates and installed Plex server 1.24.5.5173
Back to normal now - not sure when it will be safe to go to the new experience or newer server version. But at least h/w is working.
One other weird thing I noticed is that after an app upgrade on my smart tv, the prefs had changed on my Plex smart tv app - I had to disable “Normalize Multi-channel Audio” which was causing transcoding.
Have you locked the bootlocker after the restore?
Yes, locked it after restore. Works just as before with ai upscaling and all.
The only thing that tripped me up was when running the restore commands I thought I had to adb connect and I would see the device connected. But instead once the shield is booted in the proper mode you just issue the commands and it works perfectly.
With the new shield experience 9.0.2, nothing new.
Still no HW transcoding (with latest version of plex 1.25.9.5721)
Yep, beta installed yesterday with supposed fix for HW transcoding.
Nope. why even bother saying it’s fixed when it’s obviously not
Indeed. I’ve just installed the latest Plex server released and the hardware transcoding issue persists.
