THANK YOU to whoever can spare the time to look through this. I am hitting my head against a brick wall.
I am setting up my first plex server on my own local network. I want to prioritize quality and using 4k remux files, with streaming remotely is only a secondary concern and not a priority right now.
I will try and outline my current situation below.
- I currently have a google mesh net, that local cross device speeds ping at around 500Mbps.
- I am currently testing off of a 1080p remux file that I ripped myself and shows an estimate data use of 31Mbps.
- I have Direct Stream and Direct Play enabled and have confirmed on multiple devices from the dashboard that those are the methods being used when trying to watch the movie. (Direct Play on my computer, Direct Stream on my TV)
- When attempting to watch the movie set to “original” quality on either device, there is absolute CONSTANT stuttering… like every other second it skips the next second.
- When I change the quality setting to use a conversion (let’s say 1080p at an estimated 20Mbps), I see my GPU and CPU usage boost on the server, and the media plays smoothly.
- When viewing the dashboard, the local network usage goes to 12Mbps and hovers right around that (regardless of which quality mode is selected on the viewing device). (I would have expected this to change based on the quality selected and should be closer to the 31mbps estimate given on the player??)
- If I let both players play at the same time (again regardless of playing the Original at 31Mbps or 1080p Conversion at 20Mbps on either device), THEN I see a jump in local network usage that now hovers around 24Mbps. Both players continue to endlessly stutter. I can then switch either (or both of them) to use the converted method at 1080p/31Mbps, and both run smoothly with no visible change on the local network usage)
My server isn’t a powerhouse of a machine, but since I want to play files on the local network using the Direct Play/Stream functionality anyways, I would expect the hardware to be the bottleneck, nor is it since CPU and GPU barely budge when devices are streaming using those methods. However, to me something appears to be limiting the throughput even within the local network to be right around that 12Mbps per device, which is just so odd.
Any and all help is appreciated. I work a 9-5 but with my ADHD tendencies and love for technology, I have been staying up til 5am the last couple nights trying to sort this out but I need it to end and to shoot the trouble once and for all. XD
