Direct Play stuttering on local network

Hi guys,

I’ve recently ran into stuttering when playing 720p/1080p/4K content.

Some details:

  • The content is not transcoding, it is direct played
  • Subtitles are SRT, not SSA or PGS
  • The two players used where apple tv 4k and mac player
  • Not all content stutters. In fact most streams flawlessly.
  • The server is a pi4, but it’s CPU is not maxed out when it happens

I turned on the enhanced overlay player and noticed that the cache seconds would slowly go down to 0 from 100.

Any idea what may be the cause?
Also, is there any way to increase the cache? I saw some posts mentioning a Network Cache, but I was not able to find it in the server settings.

Comments may be unreleased since I am not using direct play but maybe others might have similar questions.

Have you checked your network Mbps? Is it behaving as expected?

Assume WiFi connection? If so are you on 2G or 5G network. In my area the 2G has gotten so overloaded that things don’t work right on 2G. I have various issues depending on what adjacent neighbors are doing.

Is this happening with one or with multiple concurrent streams?

The connection seems fine. It seems very inconsistent.

For example I am able to stream 3 simultaneous 4k streams normally. But sometimes a single 1080p stream will stutter.

My thinking is maybe the HDD I have is too slow?

To test your theory about HD have you tried running a suite of disk performance tests from a different computer on the same 2G or 5G radio? I might try it with and without Plex running.

There are tools that should give you the number of pending IO requests in the queue on your server. If that number is creeping up then yes you have an IO bottleneck. Be advised that even a relatively small number of queued items can be an issue.

I’ll try that.

Is there a way to increase the buffer size? I feel like this might also be a easy solution for it.
