Since the new “experience” I’ve stopped updating both the mobile app on my phone and my server. My plan was to wait for however long it will take for plex to get their ■■■■ together and release an app that does not have feature degradation.
I forgot to turn off auto updates on my iPad, which I use in my home gym. Unfortunately the app on my iPad has updated to the new experience, and I can’t even use my server because it says it’s “outdated” and I must update the server to use it on the new app.
Is there any danger in updating my actual server? Will it continue to work on my mobile app if I’m not updating the app on my phone? Are all the issues strictly mobile app or are there server issues too? Any help would be appreciated.
Same thing happened to me with the auto client update breaking the server integration (the Plex team must really have some horrendous QA/release procedures). In my case the new version isn’t even available for my distribution.
From the feedback I’ve read so far read, the update seems to be pretty bad all around. Many users (including myself) are now trying to jump though hoops to downgrade the client app. These issues really seem to be never-ending with Plex.
I’d think it would be safe, especially as nx6 confirmed that their updated server works currently with the “nonupgraded” Android client. There’s no reason to believe that Android would have a special exception.
It is fair - though - to wait for specific confirmation from an iOS user if this is the case. Personally, I update my server often (am up to date on 1.41.6.9685), yet I froze my iPhone’s update process. I only did this well after all the alarming reports about the new experience being so bad, so I assumed I was too late, but it does not look different from before, so maybe it hadn’t rolled out for me. After a month or so, I finally saw an update to Plex this week, but it doesn’t mention a GUI update or a “new” experience. But I haven’t updated anyway. As of right now, I am on 8.45 on my iPhone, and it works fine with my server.
Plex has supported old clients for a long time now. It usually takes YEARS for a client to require updating in order to continue working with modern servers. And that’s usually due to certificate failures, if I am remembering right.
