Should I Upgrade?

Server Version#: 1.27
Player Version#: 10.14.0.541 (nvidia - Shield Pro)

So, I have a very stable plex setup running on version 1.27. I have a qnap 872x running 5.0.0.2055. Both these versions are old, but I am reluctant to upgrade either due to the stability of my setup. Would you advice that I continue as I am or take the plunge and upgrade? I have notifications about upgrading both of these, but I am so concerned about breaking what is working so well.

If it ain’t broke…

Is there a compelling reason to upgrade - new feature, hardware/OS support, bug/security fix, etc.? If not, then don’t worry about it.

Release Notes: Plex Media Server

I’m running 1.29.2.6364 on Ubuntu 22.04. It is rock solid and has all the features I need. At some point there will be a reason to upgrade - I’ll want a new feature (end credit detection, etc.), it might be required due to updated client requirements, I need to update the OS, increased transcoder performance, etc. I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I store my media on a Synology DS918+. It is also my test server. I’ll load the latest release and test it out. I could probably deploy the current release, but, given my setup, there is really no reason to do so.

The clients are up to date. Some, like the SmartTV apps, auto update. I’ll manually update my Shield a few days after a new release.

I worked in IT and with ISPs where updates were allowed only once or twice per year unless it was an emergency fix. I still follow that course of action when possible.

I concur with FordGuy61.

It’s not broke and, IMHO, there’s no super-compelling reason just yet to justify the risk if it’s doing what you want AS A SERVER.

If you have and use the PlexData shared folder in that version of QTS – then don’t upgrade. QTS broke it in later updates and it’s still broken.
