Shows only record for a few seconds

Hello all,

I am using OS X 10.13.4 and Plex Version 1.13.0.5023-31d3c0c65 with HDHomeRun PRIME. All of a sudden, all of my DVR recordings only record for under 1 minute . I have tried rebooting the computer, restarting Plex but no matter what I try, every show that records end up being just about 42 seconds.

I am not using the “remove commercial” feature either. Is there a way to get this working again? I have had these shows recoding correctly for months now and now nothing works.

Attached are my logs.

Thanks for any help.

@swedorski Is anything else potentially using the tuner, or has anything else changed recently? It’s also worth upgrading to the newest server version, and ensuring your HDHR Prime has up to date firmware.

Nothing has changed except for any Plex updates installed. I am using HD Homerun Version 20180418 (1) which is the latest.

No other systems are using the HDHR Prime.

I took a quick look in the logs and noticed network issues being reported:

Might want to check the network connection the machine is on.

Are you able to watch live TV from any channel?

Yes, Live TV works just fine. The server is directly connected to a switch that goes into the router.

Is there anyone from Plex staff that can comment on this issue? Everything used to work just fine but now I only get a few seconds (42 seconds exactly in most cases).

Why is the network going down? Bad cable? Bad switch? If the network goes down during a recording you will get partial recordings. While 42 seconds seems odd if the switch is constantly power cycling you could be seeing the recording start, switch reboots, Plex sees tuner is dead so stops recording.

There are no network issues that I can see. Nothing else in the house has any connectivity issues. I have watched the switch while a recording starts and I surf the web using the same switch and everything works but still only 42 seconds records on the DVR recording. I have also taken the switch out of the equation and plugged it in directly to my cable modem and still have the same problem.

Do you have a fresh set of logs from when a recording was supposed to start until it ends? Please include show name and start/end times that show was supposed to record. Have you checked any of the system logs on the computer to see if there are any events logged at the time of a recording?

Thank you for the response. Attached are the latest logs. The recording that I have had the latest with was for WestWorld. This one only recorded for 34 minutes but should be a full hour. The recoding was set for 9-10pm EST. My computer only has Plex installed on it and no other events were recorded. I am starting to wonder if this is a problem with OS X High Sierra.

Logs do not cover the time period of the recording. They only cover June 4 06:56:24 - 11:12:43 when you downloaded the logs zip file. May need to increase the number of log files maintained to capture the previous nights recordings or try to capture the logs immediately after you see a recording stop like this. You can adjust the number of log files maintained by following the instructions for your Operating System in the Plex Advanced, Hidden Server Settings Support Article.

Just an update. I decided to start from scratch and I formatted the drive and re-installed OS X and then started with a fresh Plex setup. Once I did that, I have not had any problems. I can even use the remove commercial feature now as well.

Don’t know if I always want to do such a drastic thing again if this happens, but hopefully this helps someone.

You need to check your disk space in the future as you may have run out. Just because you are deleting your watched shows doesn’t mean that the space is being returned. On my server, it is just sending them to the recycle bin where they continue to take up disk space.

I had plenty of space (over 1TB still) so that was not an issue.

That depends on the number of volumes that you are using on your system. If everything is on a single volume then disk space was probably not the issue but if you are using separate volumes for the OS and your data storage, then it still could be. Plex uses a temp file and directory where it records your programs and when it completes the recording, then it copies the file to the library location with the proper name. If everything is on a single large volume, then as said above, space is not the issue but if you have your OS and library on separate volumes, then it can be. If the temp directory is on a different volume and that volume is running out of space, then this is exactly what is going to happen. Plex will record in the temp directory until it runs out of space and then end the recording and copy the file to the library. If your temp directory location only has 45 seconds worth of space left, then that is a big as the recording is going to get before it is ended and copied. If the temp and library directories are on the same disk or volume and it was running out of space, then the recordings would simply stop because there is no more space to create or put them but if the temp and library are on different disks or volumes, then the recording will continue in that truncated manner if the temp directory doesn’t have the space to fully record the show and the library still has plenty of space to store them. I am not saying that is what happened here but if a reformat and reinstall fixed it,…

Now that is the first explanation that has made any sense and that does apply to me. I so wish someone would have mentioned that a while ago…

Do you know where this temp folder is located so that I can keep an eye on that?

Thanks so much for that post!

Well after working for sometime, I am back to having the exact same problem. I even tried setting my Plex temp folder to a specific location with one that has plenty of space, but no change. It makes no sense how it can work and then just stop. Is there any way to figure out what this keeps happening?

This just started happening to me in the last week, too. It primarily happens on one channel and the partial recordings are always < 1 min. This is very annoying with no idea of what is causing it.

Did you ever find a solution? This has happened now for me for over 2 months, but I cannot get any response from anyone on how to debug this. Very frustrating because this is a great feature of Plex that I would love to use.
