Shuffle Play from Folder View... WHERE IS IT?

It has been long enough. Enough users have asked for it…

WHERE IS “SHUFFLE PLAY” FROM FOLDER VIEW???

My entire collection is organized through folders and NEED shuffle play from the folder view… Otherwise I have to have a ridiculous amount of libraries and playlists to do what I want… I have already done the organization once, we should not be required to do it again for something so simple… this is RIDICULOUS…

PS. Sorry for the first post being negative… Long time user, LOVE the program otherwise…

Which Plex client are you talking about exactly?

-Media server client
-Android client (phone & ShieldTV)
-Amazon FireTV client
-Windows Phone client

None of them allow SHUFFLE PLAY while in FOLDER VIEW…

The whole idea of Plex is not to need folders for organization (as long as they’re sufficiently structured to allow Plex to properly organize them).

What particular organization are you missing based on the filtering/structuring offered by Plex itself?
Instead of “having to have a ridiculous amount of libraries and playlists”, Plex allows having your music in one library (if you like you can also break them down into more libraries) – and then access your content using the metadata.

Examples:

  • view by artist, album, song
  • filtering by genre, country of origin, collection for artists
  • filtering by year, decade, genre, publisher, collection, mood, label for albums
  • filtering by mood, rating, collection for songs

Before I’ve moved to Plex, I’ve spent a crazy amount of time in manually organizing my media – first by folders, later by completing the embedded metadata that was only partially filled by clients. When I moved to Plex it took some time for me to overcome the urge to keep doing this – just for the sake of doing it.

What level of structure/organization do you currently miss when accessing your media regularly (meaning… not using the folder view)?

Don’t get me wrong… I’m not saying “You’re holding it wrong!” – but sometimes people tend to stick to old habits and therefore miss that they could do the same or more out-of-the-box.

“OTHER VIDEOS” needs FOLDER VIEW to access in any organized fashion… And that needs SHUFFLE PLAY while in the FOLDER VIEW.

It doesn’t – not necessarily.
Considering about the shuffle I had (wrongly?) assumed this was about your music.
However… with other video you sort of picked the only use case where Plex fails to lookup any metadata – unless you have it embedded in your files (which will then allow the exact same level of organization as posted above).

PS: please stop writing in all-caps – this is considered yelling and while you’re free to do negative postings, we’d like to keep the tone respectful and constructive. Posting in all-caps at least gives the appearance you don’t.

…So this is something that needs to be added to Plex… Home videos, random internet videos… etc… are just woefully neglected, but they can easily be addressed with SHUFFLE PLAY while in FOLDER VIEW.

PS tom80H: Is that how you talk… monotone… or do you emphasize import words to get your point across BETTER? EXACTLY

JS He’s correct, though. All caps is yelling. If you’d like to emphasize words there’s always bolding and italicizing. Both options are available on this forum

Thanks for the info.

We still need Shuffle Play while in Folder View for Other Videos

Yes, my wife is being driven crazy since Plex updated the interface and she can no longer shuffle music within a folder.

I tried meta tagging the music with genre tags but Plex is not updating the genres of the songs so she still cannot shuffle her songs. Are you all working on a fix? (If you can shuffle by other categories, why not by files in folder like you used to)

If you organize you music/folder as proposed by Plex, your server will automatically assign genres and other metadata from online sources. If you refer to metadata embedded in those files… make sure you have local media assets in the agent settings for music enabled – you also might need to check Use embedded metadata in the advanced settings of this particular library; then all you’ll need to do is to re-scan the library and Plex will update the data accordingly.
(of course you could also manually edit the metadata within Plex – but I don’t think that’s what you’re after)

Tom80H,

Thank you. However, both of those settings were already enabled and when I rescan the music Plex is not picking up the changes in the genre tags.

instead of telling everybody “you don’t need shuffle folder shut up and just sort your music right” why don’t you just add the feature that there’s countless posts asking for?

I’ve got a huge archive of jungle tapes that Plex doesn’t seem to enjoy scanning but I have the folder I just want to shuffle the folder let me shuffle the folder like every other media player ever made

I wonder where you’ve read/heard that particular message. All we discussed was that Plex focus is not on folder based organization and how some of the users‘ use cases can also work „the Plex way“.

If you feel so strongly about this feature, vote for it.

If you feel so strongly about consistently ignoring your users needs and just telling them to suck it up and deal with it, why do you even have this forum?

Random users signing in for specific questions and concerns aren’t going to go through all the trouble of “voting” for what they want, not all of them are going to be even aware that there’s a voting system for requested features. Especially if the feature used to exist on some devices and was a core part of their experience until some detached dev decide “nah screw it I know better” and booted it out.

I beg of you, make some attempt to understand user frustrations instead of just complaining that they aren’t doing it right.
