Thank you for your fast reply! …and for your very useful Userprofile. It contains a lot of interesting stuff!
Ok,
I could not sign in to the Plex server so I restarted Plex on the NAS (a couple of times…)
Now, it seems, that the Plex server is down or not responding, but the Plex-package is active and running (the lastest Plex PlexMediaServer-1.18.0.1944-f2cae8d6b-x86_64.spk).
I used claimpms.sh on my DS with either 127.0.0.1 or the local IP (192.168…) ond from my Mac too . Both did not work out:
Validating IP address
Getting PMS Server Identifier
******** ERROR ********
We failed to get the Plex Media Server ID
Please check server is up and running, as well as the IP address entered
Looking at the logs at /volume1/Plex/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server/Logs/Plex\ Media\ Server.log
I see, its running, (but only gives a log entry each hour) but I cannot connect at all:

Trying to connect with FireFox or Safari just gives this:
It all worked good for weeks, until I logged out of the server. Maybe Murphy…
Here is the log, fresh from the DS Plex Media Server.zip (116.4 KB)
(If it contains any private data, please delete it, after checking. Thank you.)
EDIT:
After a Reboot of the NAS (DS1815+) nothing has changed,
only the Browser says: The connection to 192.168... was interrupted while the page was loading.
Searching the Forum, I found a lot, but no solution. ;-(
There are no network issues. (at least none caused by me or changed/repaired by me)
It is working now, but it was a painful experience and I really don’t know, what went wrong (beside logging out from the server w/o any confirmation popup).
Here is the short version:
First, I had to switch from HTTPS to HTTP visiting the Plex Server via the Browser. HTTP://192.168…:32400:/web not HTTPS://192.168… which all of my bookmarks are.
Thats rebooting the Router, which I not mentioned I did, but I did. Dunno, if that helped or not. There is no indication why it suddenly worked.
What do you mean by that?
And yes, the connection is flaky, I sometimes have issues on connecting to the local server from a Plex Kodi Addon or Plex iPhone App. Even the Plex.app on my Mac. I need to wait some seconds or minutes, then the server is available again. Only on a Samsung TV it always works and has no connection issues.
I have set up several Plex Servers on several places of my friends and all those connections are flaky. The ppl. use mostly a FritzBox as a router/modem and there seems nothing wrong with it.
My bet would be, if I turn all security settings off, it’ll work better… but that cannot happen.
Ok, never say never…
It happened as I said. Disabling or loosen all the security features in Plex and its clients helped to not getting problems with connectivity anymore…
Anyways, I’ve now read all the (really good, informative and userfriendly written) pages about security, secure server connections, network settings, double NAT, troubleshooting remote access, etc. Those documents all helped me to understand Plex in the way it likes to live in my network and helped me to verify all my settings are correct).
Also, I took the time to clean up my mess in cabling and was able to physicly clean my switches too as you suggested. I clean my keyboard and other input devices once a year, so why not clean other important components too… good idea!
I have found another Problem, but that’s not part of this thread.
Subsequent to this are the security settings (Settings - Server - Network)
If your home is wired or using secure wifi (all modern wifi does have an encrypted SSID), It’s ok to use “Preferred”. It will try HTTPS immediately but fall back to HTTP if it can’t get connected. Some NAS boxes must start with HTTP.
When using Preferred, once Plex/Web and PMS find each other, the connection will upgrade itself automatically to secure internally even though the browser does not indicate it.
Accidents happen. If this is a button, ppl. need to push every 3 days, then its ok to not have an additional “are you sure?”.
If ppl. press this button evey year, then it would be nice, if there would be an additional “are you sure?”, but we don’t need to disguss this. I real life, I know, what I’m doing…
That sounds very simple, but it was a hell of work to get the server back “working”. I surely don’t want to press that %#$* button anymore.
I have read the helpfiles now but surely will forget about it… hopefully.
Thanks for your help.
