simonjhogan's PLEX Client for LG Smart TV

Alright there is a simple issue view on the site now http://plex.h3consulting.net ... use it to lodge bugs and request features ... I'll still be checking this forum, but I would like to keep requests/bugs stored somewhere other than scattered thru the forum ...

It isn't very complex but it works ...

Thanks

S

Hey simon, that’s working perfect good job.

Very much appreciated

Cheers

Not sure you need to know. LG released a new software version. 04.52.06

Mabye you need to know before you continue your development of the plex client.

Greetz.

Not sure it matters … Have they bought back the built in plex client?

No. There no plex client. And still no audio stream selection option. So keep up the good work :)

The app Media Link is powered by PLEX. Is that what you mean?

OK, so the Plex app seems to be working nicely - was able to even watch Alice in Wonderland in 3D with no problems.

Question 1 - it seems that I have to leave the thumb drive in and run the app off of it every time - I'd rather it download to My Apps.

Question 2 - can you include the ability to also see Shared Libraries?

Thanks - and keep up the great work!!

Q1: The client cannot be installed until it's available in the App Store. At some point Simon will release it once it's ready and LG approves it.

Q2: that's up to Simon ;)

Hi All,

A quick update from me... I was one of those getting the blank/loading screen, thought to be due to incorrect PMS settings being retained.

The new versions with the "press red to reset" feature weren't working for me - press red, select OK, nothing. Press red again, app quits.

Or, press red, select Cancel, nothing. Press red again, app quits.

I recorded a video of the app's behaviour, took screenshots of my TV config, and then started hacking around with the index.js file and plex.js file as referenced by robis in post 174. Whilst I was hacking around the "Press OK to RESET settings..." dialogue box was left on the screen, screensavering around for a couple of minutes. I clicked OK and boom - the initial settings screen was displayed and I could correct my PMS settings (I'd omitted the :32400 - as I expect 80% of first time users will do).

So... all good, I'm in again. But the press red to reset feature definitely needs some work - or at least the attempting to load with incorrect PMS settings needs a timer added so that folks don't get stuck with a blank screen.

In general use the app is great. I'm finding it won't play (doesn't even attempt) a number of my movie files that I know MediaLink on my 2012 LG TV plays fine. Haven't worked out what the common factor is (it'll be an encoding type, I'm sure)... but again, it would be great if the app didn't just fail to respond but gave some error about not supporting the file type - or even attempted to play it then bomb back to the menu. Initially I thought the OK wasn't working - until I tried some alternate films that played fine.

Thanks for all your work Simon - keep the updates a'comin. ;)

Cheers,

Bobsta

  • I installed the plex last version, I put the  ip address of my plex server but I do not see anything - i see the panel with the help , about setting ... but not see my movies and others things .
    I tried to uninstall and reinstall the Plex on my  USB flash disk but it did not give me the option to re-select a new address or scan .
    Anyone having a problem?

yes - you probably inserted IP without port

just do as i wrote in post 174 -  https://forums.plex.tv/topic/89004-simonjhogans-plex-client-for-lg-smart-tv/page-9#entry532897

File  196953\system\script\index.js

find this

Menu.prototype.initialise = function(focus) {
var self = this;

//Check PMS Server Set

and rewrite as

Menu.prototype.initialise = function(focus) {
var self = this;

this.settingsDialog(true);

//Check PMS Server Set

run with this code (try SCAN functionality and SAVE)

after that replace index.js by original file and enjoy

Hi Shambiko,

As Robis says, you've most likely just inserted your IP address without the port (i.e. without :32400). The app *should* let you reset it by pressing the RED button and then selecting OK.

However, on my TV this doesn't work. If you're comfortable editing the code of the app then follow Robis' instructions.

Alternatively, I found that if I pressed RED, then waited about 5-6 minutes before hitting OK, then that reset the app and allowed me to enter my server settings (e.g. 192.168.1.4:32400)

On another note, I have to wonder if all this work is strictly necessary. We have Simon working on this app, Nickbabenko on another version and possibly others. However, HD1080 and Orca developed an app for Samsung (starting in 2011) that works really well and has all the features we're looking for. I can't help thinking that teaming up with them would be a smarter use of everyone's time in producing a good working client for LG. Otherwise I can see this consuming an *awful* lot of time to get right.

On another note, I have to wonder if all this work is strictly necessary. We have Simon working on this app, Nickbabenko on another version and possibly others. However, Orca developed an app for Samsung (starting around 18 months) that works really well and has all the features we're looking for. I can't help thinking that teaming up with him/her/them would be a smarter use of everyone's time in producing a good working client for LG.

I saw that Samsung app and was impressed to see Plex Home Theater run natively on the TV. Especially because in some aspects it was more advanced than their Android/iOS client. It not even supports myPlex, but it also uses the pin-code to subscribe. It's something I need for my purpose.

I think it takes some months before we get myplex on LG.

My own TV is not "smart", but I have a full-blown Haswell powered system attached to my plasma and run Plex or XBMC.

If I had to buy a smart TV now, I would definitely choose a Samsung.

These developers can only get together if they choose themselves to. There are also advantages if they develop each on their own and merge later.

I would like to stop at my friend's place today, but it isn't clear to me if the latest changes (subtitles & transcoding) is already commited to github? Anyone knows this?

I’m sure simon will get everything worked out in time.

He hasn’t been working on this client very long really and this type of thing takes time to get all the kinks and bugs out.

If you ask me he has accomplished a lot so far for the amount of hours he has put into it.

We must remember he said himself his time is limited due to family and life itself, he is not working on this around-the-clock.

I’m sure in the end everything will be just the way he wants it… All good :slight_smile:

Cheers!

New release at http://plex.h3consulting.net ... new media player and basic subtitle support ...

The initial screen will timeout eventually (it seems to take ages for some reason) ... not sure why the RED button isn't working for some, it works fine on my setup. Anyway have made some changes to prevent this kind of issue from continuing to happen ... i hope.

The new release has not been put on github .. right now I went to get things to a level I am happy with before I open it up to everyone ...

A quick look at the samsung web api and it appears to be somewhat different from LGs ... i.e a fairly major rewrite of code to get functioning on LG ... I only had a quick look though so could be wrong ...
