Looking to do Plex Media Server on a simple NAS. I or 2 devices AT MOST to stream to though not very often. Only about 200-300 movies files, a few hundred MP3, and just central storage for photos (maybe 10-15GB worth). Movies about 80% DVD and 20% Blue ray, almost no 4Ks.
Thinking of Synology DS418? 2-4TB drives as RAID 1. SSD or HDD? Maybe a simpler NAS for my needs? Smaller NAS with built in storage instead?
Budget definitely an issue, expansion growth for the future not really a big concern, only really like maybe 1-2 new movies a year that come out that I might want to go buy.
Constructive advice definitely welcome. Again, not looking for hardware to sequence DNA strings in my spare time, just something simple to meet the above specs.
Thank you so much trumpy81!! This gives me a starting point!
As a follow up, this being the case, would the DS220+ also work as an alternative? Same price really - is just the fact that its 2-bays really the determining factor? granted, RAID 1 is my only option, but what else should I take into account?
Thanks for all your help so far trumpy…I do appreciate it!
Once last thought…
It looks like ill have it in my budget to go up a couple hundred. Should I go for the 420+ vs the 420j? Is core more of an issue than speed as ar as Plex movie streaming to make it worth going up to the 420+? I’m going to by using WD 4TB Reds as storage (just because Ive never had issues with WD, whereas I had a Seagate fail on me once, but I could just as easily use Seagate Ironwolfs) - is the 420+ a better bang for the extra $200.
