Simple question, I think

I am in the beginning phase of setting up my own NAS for my own media. However, a relative has given me permission to share his library. Which is great, he has lots of stuff. If I set up my own will that affect somehow my sharing my relative’s library? Will I be able to see everything, mine and my relative’s media in one place? Basically I am hesitant to risk losing my relative’s media library. How would this work? Sorry for the rambling as I don’t have a handle on the terminology. Thanks

You can run your own Plex Media Server and still have access to your relative’s server.

You cannot be part of their Plex Home. On your relative’s server you should appear as a friend under “Manage Library Access.” See screenshot below.

Check with your relative before setting up your Plex server. If you are part of their Plex Home, then they will be the owner/administrator of your Plex server, not you.

Here’s another way to check.

Login to your account at https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/.

Click on your user icon and choose Switch User.

Do you see any other users besides yourself?

Yes = You’re in a Plex Home
No = You’re not in anyone else’s Plex Home.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I checked and there are no other users so I guess that is good for setting up my own server. I guess I will dive in and see how it goes. Thanks again.
