Simple way to fix 90% of live TV if only Plex will listen

then what is the point of the server!! going forward every device has possible compatibility issues. you will be ever client apps fixing apps. if the server is capable of converting everything to an acceptable format then why not. Please can we stop focusing on the box. the box should be irrelevant, that is what a server should be doing making the client - irreverent!

The server expects that the client can play this format and the client probably also tells it that way. That is why it is not working.

agreed. but if i can force encode everything would this not fix my issue!!

Good luck with that. If you get enough people on board it might happen (or not). The disable transcode button also made into PMS.

people are doing it anyway by forcing the bitrate. seems to be the solution to alot of things.

Thank you for the additional explanation, it makes the title of the thread much easier to understand.

I had to test it because I thought that one time turning on the DVR setting did transcode on the fly. I will have to test it further because I don’t think it converted to h.264 while it was recording a show and see if it is now a post process.

Plex has the metrics on processor types and would be in a position to know just how many such a decision would affect.

i don’t want it to be a default. i understand some peoples like mine are different from the normal. I just believe there should be an option. Fully understood its a use at your own risk option.

sorry i misunderstood. the option above convert all recordings is a post script not as its being played i didn’t know myself tbh, but encoding a live stream is possible as this is my work around at them moment as forcing 720 4MB works flawlessly

Actually, that setting that you want only affects the video. Most LiveTV video is mpeg2 which a lot of clients don’t support and they take up a lot of space, so that option transcodes the video. In most cases the audio is already in a format that all clients should support so you shouldn’t need to transcode the audio.

AAC is one of the most basic audio codecs out there and if you have a device that can’t play it, there is something seriously wrong with your device, certified or not. It’s like not being able to view a jpg file. It should just work.

What you really need is not a server setting but a client setting to prefer a specific audio format. In Android mobile there is an option to disable certain audio codecs. There is already an internal request to add this to Android TV which should solve your issue if it ever gets implemented.

my device can play ACC perfectly fine. it even transcodes the SD live TV channels to that format and standard defination works flawlessly

when i force 4MB

Trancodes to ACC and it again works fine

So why does it cause the freezing when playing ACC_LATM direct ??

easy to blame the boxes

Can I remind you of the Plex slogan (from the home page)

Plex brings together all the media that matters to you. Your personal collection will look beautiful alongside stellar streaming content. Enjoy Live TV & DVR, a growing catalogue of great web shows, news and podcasts. It’s finally possible to enjoy all the media you love in a single app, on any device, no matter where you are.

maybe this should be revisited

I have had this problem since i first set my server up a year ago and just lived with it

But seems similar issues have been reported since 2017

and as seems to be the norm we are going to fix it, closed thread

What is really making me angry is if i can force transcode i fix the problem.

a year ago this was driving me mad so i just left it and thought ill just set all my boxes to 4MB,
I wish i had never let it enter the fay again. But being in IT i was always going to surface!

I just downloaded the official HD homerun app on the same device

So in theory if Plex was using direct play the stream is untouched so the app would also crash can we agree that this would be the case, if my crappy Android box was the problem i would also experience the exact same issue using this app on the same device watching the same channel!

hazard a guess 1080 HD live TV and passing through advents without any issue.

Is this a simple case that the version of ffmpeg that is installed with andriod TV boxes has the issue as discribed in some of thee ffmeg forums with the ACC_LATM codec.

Ok further testing.

The home run App does work but has similar symptoms. after about 30 minutes the box picture freezes so does the audio for about a second and then fails but the app does recover and carrys on playing for a further 30 minutes and repeat. Now then, I think this is 39MB.

so currently I have plex use 20MB as the internal maximum for LAN. and everything plays beautify but Live TV disregards this maximum.

Can this be forced for Live TV it should not be ignoring it for live TV if the client is saying my maximuim is 20 and the server is just ignoring this and passing 39MB. then Server fault righht!!

i do notice that some vids i have acquired do struggle on the device over a certain bitrate so will need to go through them and unset the maximum and see the sweet spot is
