Plex players on Windows are sorely lacking a “sleep” timer.
It would be really useful to be able to set a timer, and the action that the player should do after the timer runs out. The options could be - Turn off the monitor, Sleep, Shutdown. The same could apply after the movie, the episode, or a playlist finishes.
If MPC-HC can turn off the monitor after the playback finishes, Plex players should be able to do that too. I don’t know about other platforms, but on Windows it’s going to be really simple to achieve. Then it’s just a matter of integrating that into the playback menu.
Let us set the number of minutes (and/or simply select “after playback finishes”), and then select the action. “Run a program” as one of the actions would be a nice addition. It would give us a lot of possibilities.
There’s already an existing, more generic suggestion to add a sleep timer to all apps. I suggest you comment/vote in that thread in order to avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes.
Unless I’m missing some unique aspect of your suggestion I’ll close this thread as a duplicate.
My suggestion refers to Windows platform. It would be substantially easier to implement it there. Of course, you can always run
shutdown -s -t XXX
But that can’t be invoked easily with a remote, and isn’t really an elegant solution.
Also, that’s just shutdown - you’d have to figure out something else to turn off the monitor.
That’s completely different to Android TV, where there’s a native sleep timer function in the TV, and you can easily set it with a remote.
Don’t you realize that I’m asking for something that’s mostly basic functionality?
MPC-HC can play the next file, turn off the monitor, hibernate, shutdown, logoff, lock computer, exit program. VLC has an option to run a command after the playlist.
This is significantly more than a simple timer, but also relatively easy to implement on Windows.
PS: Can’t really distract or cannibalize votes from a post that was created 8 years ago, and didn’t have any replies for the last 2.5 years.
It’s true, that other suggestion is a bit dated and therefore still referring to the predecessors of the current-generation Plex for Windows player (Plex Home Theatre → PHT). Your addition to their suggestion is that you consider an option to not only stop playback and letting the device sleep, but also to shut the client machine down.
Their votes haven’t expired, have they?
That thread has currently 6 votes asking for a sleep timer on all platforms.
You’ve created a separate thread asking for a sleep timer on the Windows desktop apps… could be 7 votes for the other thread (+ amending it with your idea to support shutting down the player on desktop platforms). That’s “distracting or cannibalizing” votes for me
Stop playback, sleep, turn off the monitor, shutdown the machine, start a program (or a script?).
Can’t really “distract” from something, if it’s been forgotten and ignored - even by Plex. This is basic functionality, yet Plex seems to be more interested in features that can be marketed. We shouldn’t have to vote on something that is so basic that it should’ve been there from version 1.0.
It’s been 8 years. There’s no excuse.
I was using the term „distracted“ in the sense of having a competing suggestion for the same feature. Votes are limited, so by doing this, you’re „taking away“ votes that could otherwise be focused on the existing suggestion. This way, each suggestion lives below its actual potential with regards to their number of votes…
Imagine your thread collects 5 more votes … instead of seeing the attention on the original suggestion doubling, there’s two less noticeable suggestions.
Long story short: I invite you to add your voice to the existing suggestion (both in commenting and voting for it).
