I’ve been using Plex ~10 years with little to no issues, but recently I’m having some trouble with scanning and it affecting other things.
Scanning seems to take forever. If I add a new movie to Plex, it’ll scan for hours. This also seems to affect the server overall – often when scanning, server settings will be unavailable and my clients won’t be able to connect to the server. They’ll either time out or give a message like “no playable content”.
I’m attaching logs here. Please let me know what other information I can provide to help resolve this issue.
If I stop the plex media server service, restart it and then scan library files, it completes in less than a minute. So the issue seems to be it gets stuck once the server is already up and running and scans newly added movies.
And I believe it could be related to the new Plex Movie agent. I upgraded my libraries from the Legacy agent to the new Plex Movie agent and I believe that is also when this issue began occurring. I could be wrong and it may be coincidental…
I’ve removed all Plugins and deleted everything in the folders you mentioned. (PhotoTranscoder folder was ~7GB!) After restarting Plex, scan library was very quick (<30 seconds). I had optimized database, cleaned bundles and emptied trash earlier today, but I’ll do that again now.

So I am still getting stuck on scanning. Added 1 movie today. Once it was imported and picked up by Plex, it is hung up scanning. You can see in the image below that the orange orb fills up like it has completed scanning, but it just continues to stay like this. It’s been about 15 minutes now, but I expect it continue for a while longer.
EDIT: It actually finished right when I made this post! But 15 minutes still seems like a long time to scan one movie, right?
For what it’s worth I’ve also noticed that scanning for updates in my libraries is significantly slower since the beta update that was published yesterday. There is certainly some regression here which has been introduced recently.
Thanks for sharing. Cleaning out PhotoTranscoder, Plug-in Support Caches & Data and removing Plugins definitely helped. Scanning is faster than it was before (several hours!!) when adding a new file, but it still seems kinda slow. Anyhow, I’m much happier with how it’s operating now.
@trumpy81 for what its worth upgrading to plexmediaserver-1.20.4.3517-ab5e1197c.x86_64.rpm resolved the issue for me and scanning is back to what I would consider normal.
