Slow Transcoding when it isn't even needed!

Server Version#: 1.13.5.5332
Player Version#:3.2.20

I’m having 2 issues at once with PMS for Windows streaming mpeg2 files to the Plex Windows app.

  1. Plex is transcoding to h264 which is unnecessary. I can play the files just fine directly from a directory so Plex should just be direct playing the file.

  2. Plex is saying my Ryzen 2400G isn’t fast enough to transcode smoothly which seems crazy to me. Yes, HW transcoding is on.

1 - Windows apps and regular Windows programs are not equal. Regular Windows programs can access all codecs installed onto the computer. Windows apps are limited and only have access to some. Blame Windows for that. So the Plex for Windows app is not able to play mpegts.

2 - Not sure. Are you also burning in sub titles. PMS is not able to utilize all cores when certain subtitles are involved. Please recreate this and provide the log from PMS and we can see why it is slow.

I got your log. The file you are trying to play is using the mpeg2video codec. Windows apps do not support this codec so transcoding is required.

Also, we don’t support hardware transcoding for the Ryzen so it is using a generic hardware transcoder available for Windows. I would recommend turning off hardware transcoding and let the Ryzen do the work. You may actually get better results.

I get that part, but my Ryzen 2400g should have no trouble
dealing with it…and yet I’m getting the error that my computer
is too slow to handle the transcode.

I don’t know if the Plex app uses it, but you can definitely play MPEG2 in Windows apps. You just need to install the MPEG2 app from Microsoft.

Yep. Hardware decode sucks on Ryzen 2400G. Turning off Hardware decode is much, much faster.

Yay, but yet, bummer. So Plex will not use the Windows MPEG2 decoder nor will it use the Ryzen 2400G for hardware encoding…

As noted above, just because Windows has an MPEG2 decoder doesn’t mean anything to Plex for some reason.

Not sure that helps. We basically rely on hardware decoding. I’m checking though.

AFAIK it should use allow the hardware MPEG decoder to be available to all apps. I’d be happy to do the footwork on this, but I’m on mobile with Android right now.

It used to cost money for the app but I believe Microsoft made it free at some point. I use it to play MPEG2 in the native movies app.

Double checking the OPs logs, PMS was using hardware decoding of the mpeg2 codec. So the issue appears to be the player not being able to playback mpeg2 even if the hardware supports it. I’m still waiting to hear back from the devs if there is a limitation elsewhere with the player.
