So what resolution I'm looking at?

Server Version#: Version 1.15.2.793

Greetings

So I opened a movie to watch - my client is Google Chrome on linux PC with 4k monitor and I’m using dedicated server for plex. The movie is 4k (3840x2160) HEVC 53Mbps. Then i see the following:

  • in Google Chrome, while playing, it says “Convert to 2160p 4k (Maximum) @ 53.9Mbps”
  • in chrome://media-internals, it says 2276x1280 h264
  • in Plex dashboard it says its transcoding to 1080p h264

That is 3 different resolutions reported for one event (movie) - two of those come directly from plex and one from chrome statistics. So what exactly I’m looking at and why this is happening?

I can only tell you that web browsers don’t play HEVC. The transcoding is therefore unavoidable.
Fetch yourself a Linux build of PMP, if you are after direct play.
