Plex/Web caps local 4K content to 1080p

Hi,

I just noticed that when using Plex/Web to locally play back 4K content, the server is transcoding to 1080p. The Plex/Web device is on a 5K monitor, so it is capable of playing 4K content.

I checked all the server settings that could be relevant, as well as the Plex/Web Player settings, they all seem fine. Can’t figure this out.

Any clues?

Try with Safari and this version of the app: https://app.plex.tv

I am always using app.plex.tv but was using Chrome. I just tried with Safari and it works. Weird. What’s Chrome’s issue here?

Thanks!

Chrome doesn’t support HEVC. Safari does now.

But shouldn’t Plex server still retain the 4K resolution and just transcode to h264?

4K doesn’t really work in H.264. There may be limits in the browsers themselves or in the transcoder. Particularly when using hardware transcoders.

Alright. Thanks for explaining!

You can avoid web browsers completely with Plex for Mac & Windows.
