Solved Chromecast playback issues from Drobo Plex Media Server

Server Version#: 1.19.1.2701
Player Version#: 7.31.0.16802

Symptoms: many movies that previously played inside my network on Chromecast enabled (with dongle) TVs (two TVs with Chromecasts) stopped playing some movies three weeks ago after an update. These movies would play on Phones and in Browsers both inside and outside my network, and even on Chromecasts OUTSIDE my network.

Failed troubleshooting steps taken:
Power off Chromecast devices.
Stop and restart service.
Stop service, restart Drobo, and restart service.
Update firmware and dashboard for Drobo 5N (there were none).
Manually update Plex Media Server.
Clear data, cache, and uninstall Plex app on phone.

Observations: Finally I noticed in the dashboard that when I would start playing a “bad movie” that the Plex server would show it immediately in a “paused” state. Other “good movies” would immediately start in the “playing” state.

The “bad movies” were ones that I had watched clips from prior to an update 3 weeks ago (I was reviewing clips to see how my newly encoded archived DVDs looked), and then paused the movies to inspect certain frames. My suspicion was/is that the titles were erroneously locked in a paused state and the Plex Media Server could/would not resume playback.

Solution: I was on the verge of uninstalling Plex from the Drobo and deleting the directory when it was suggest to try deleting the databases only. Instead, I used the “Clean Bundles” action in the Plex Dashboard Troubleshooting section.
