(Solved) Live TV "direct play" w/ HDHomeRun works everywhere but Samsung TV (Tizen)

Seems to work in 5.73.2

Server Version#: 1.30.1.6497 (smb) / Dec 14 2022 / nvidia SHIELD
Player Version#: 5.51.1 / Platform version 5 / Plex for Samsung

Ok, deployed HDHomeRun prime, and connected to Plex. Works amazing on mobile, web, desktop.

However, Live TV coming from the HDHomeRun doesn’t work on either of my newish Samsung Frame TVs. It hangs for a while “transcoding” then gives “Playback Error An unexpected playback problem occurred.”

Guide comes up no problem, and actually plays back recorded DVR content perfectly on to the Samsung TV as well.

Plex channels work great and all the normal content works perfectly on the Samsung TVs, it’s perfectly amazing and no issues other than this.

I have a very similar issue on my 2021 QN65Q80AAFXZA TV. I dont understand why we’re getting the error message when showing Playback info that Live TV direct play not allowed and Live TV direct stream is not allowed. This forces PMS to transcode the live tv stream which then causes buffering on my TV. I’ve tried every setting under the sun on my PMS but with no resolution. I can stream directly from my HDhomerun to my Samsung tv by going to Sources, HDhomerun, without any issues. Shouldnt my Samsung tv support directplay on live tv?

Yes, agree. Using the TV to connect direct to the tuner plays fine. This is definitely a glitch with the Plex for Samsung app.

Plex for samsung app also seems many versions behind what plex team claims they have released. This says 5.52.3 is released Plex for Samsung (2016+ 4K/UHD televisions) - #97 by sLumpy but the latest available is 5.49.0 which isnt even a release they have listed in the change log.

It’s shocking how long this issue has been going on. Well over a year. I have this on a Samsung Q90r.

Have just purchased a brand new Q90b and the issue is still there along with one that will not play the sound on any video I have recorded through plex.

This is specifically an issue with the samsung tizen app, some weird workaround they coded in there for an ancient purpose no one remembers anymore. Please fix Plex, come on!

I have the same model Samsung TV, using HDHOMERUN Quad Flex model, connected to UniFi UDM-SE (router/switch) and have Asustor AS6702-T NAS loaded as Plex Media Server. I can view live TV on Plex NAS, even connect to HDHomeRun but surfing with channel changes is so so painful. I returned my Tablo for very same reason. Told problem w Samsung (?). Not even clear if trying to sideload their app makes any sense. Still trying to come up with workaround. Did you get any insight for improving situation? Thanks for a reply. - J

It appears to be working now. The client app on my Samsung TV is now at 5.58. So, they must have finally corrected the problem.

I am in Plex app version 5.61 and I still have the same issue. Live TV will not direct play. Would love to see the settings for the folks for whom it is working.
