So basically my problem is that some files on my media server do not play on the web client in chrome browser but play fine on the android client (both on my galaxy s10 and an amazon fire stick) and on my Roku tv.
Additionally i have not paid for the windows 10 client as i mostly use the web client if im on my desktop but the files also play for the 1 min demo in the windows client. Seems to be limted to the web all. I have transcoding off and settings set to play in original format as i am not network contstrained.
Usually i access plex via app.plex.tv however it also does not work if i log in via the client bundled with the server on the nas. Im on wired so my local network can more than handle it and my internet is fast enough that i can remote stream this same show from the gym for example on my phone.
Browsers have limited playback capabilities. While the desktop client might look mostly similar, it has much better playback capabilities and support to deal with more codecs.
With transcoding disabled, you will certainly run into issues if your media is not just mp4/h264/aac (and some minor deviations)
Side note: not sure what desktop client you want to pay for… the clients offered by Plex are Plex Media Player (focusing on a HTPC use case) and Plex for Mac/Windows (the „regular“ desktop client). Last I’ve checked those were free ;).
I don’t think the legacy/discontinued app from the Microsoft store is still around. https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/?lang=#plex-app
ok update it was the legacy app from 2017 so i downloaded the plex app from the website and the media plays fine on that.
However a new snag has appeared while the media does work on the new plex app on desktop and the plex app on android (both phone and fire stick) it does not work on my roku tv which is odd because i am sure i have played that series on that tv in the past.
The error the living room tv gives is different though it says direct play is disabled but i checked and its most definitely on.
yep. that tv is older though i bought it in 2016 and who knows if it was state of the art then…idk
truthfully the roku functionality is a bit lacking may be time to just plug in a fire stick. when i bought a tv for the bedroom i just bought a dumb one for under half the price and plugged in a fire stick and it works just as good if not better than spending on a smart tv
