I run a Plex Media Server on Linux (v 4.35.1). I’ve downloaded a media file, the second episode in the series (the first episode plays fine) but it refuses to play on the desktop/web player for Plex (app.plex.tv). It played on my Vizio TV for a little bit but then froze. Restarting it I get the message:
Playback Error
There was an unexpected error during playback. Please visit our forums if you continue to experience this problem.
Tried using the PS4 version of Plex Player (v 4.29.6) it plays!
Using the Play Player built into my Vizio TV (v 5.0.8) it fails with:
Playback Error
Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error
When I use the Plex Mobile app (v 8.1.2.18135) it works.
Why does this media file play on the mobile app and the PS4 app but not on the built-in Vizio app nor the desktop/web?
Me personally, I can adapt and eventually view the content. However I have less tech-savvy users and I’d rather not have to explain “Well I’m sorry but this video will not play with that app, you need to try another way”.
