I was told that placing this thread here might help me so here it is. Background first. I run 2 Synology NAS drives with a Plex Media Server on each one. But, about a year ago, I purchased a new Mac Studio to be used for all of my personal Photographic work that I do. I installed Plex Media Server on the Mac Studio OS Sonoma 14.5. The Plex Media Server’s version is 1.40.4.8679. I also installed the Plex Player for Mac Version 1.97.2.190-ca5000d0. Everything seems to be working good for a long time, but now I am running into the error above. If I try to use either the Plex Media Player or the Plext Media Server on the Mac, I will get the error “Something went wrong”. If I try to access ANY image/video on this Mac Studio using either of those apps, I am getting the error. If I try to log into the server through the Web on the Mac, using Plex.TV, I am getting the error. It is like the Plex apps just don’t want to talk to the Mac. Now if I try to access the images/videos on the Mac from other computers in the house, I am able to get it with the error. If I try it from my iPhone, I can get in. I just can’t get in if I am using apps on the Mac Studio it self. I don’t know if this is a Player issuer or server issue. Sometimes if I use some Funct-F5 key, it might let me in further and it doesn’t have on the first levels of the Plex folders that I have created. The error appears when I am about to go into level just before the actual images/videos. Oh, and when I get this error it will not let me back out. I normally will kill the Plex Player and start over.
I want you to check the size of the following Folder in your Home Library. Right Click( Get Info) Your will find Home Library in ‘Go Menu’ whilst holding down the ‘Option key’. Looking forward to what you find.
11,192,024,329 bytes (11.59 GB on disk) for 241,089 items
I would be curious what gets recorded in your PMS log when you get this problem, but it sounds like a job for Plex DBRepair based on what SE56 asked. Use it to check/repair your DB and remove old files from the PhotoTranscoder directory the way PMS is designed to do but occasionally fails.
It was recommended that I put this thread here and I am not sure why, except I did what I was told. Now, the thing is that I have been trying to say that this error does NOT show up everywhere else when trying to access this Mac Plex Media Server images/videos. I have many other computers and devices on our home network that can and do access my Plex Media NETWORK at any given time. These computers and devices include various Windows OSs, Mac OSs, iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, etc… All of this other devices use whatever simple Plex Media PLAYER is appropriate for the viewing. I have a few of these devices that run into various issues with access, one being the “Something went wrong” error. But, in almost all other devices/OSs, I can access the Mac Studio Plex Media Server and its images/videos WITHOUT issue.
So to say that I need to repair the DB on the Mac Studio almost sounds like WHY? If it is working for other devices/OSs, isn’t it more likely that something actually is wrong with the Player/Server Apps on the Mac Studio.
I will do as you have suggested, but wanted to make sure that the “WHOLE” picture has been presented.
So, to fully understand the procedures, I will follow this link above and do the repair on the Server DB. Also, I will remove ALL which will effectively clear the whole PhotoTranscoder folder.
I apologize if I misread that issue. Running the DB tool check won’t hurt anything, and in that case you there’s nothing to repair. As I haven’t run into Something Went Wrong often, I had difficulty understanding from your description when it occurred. I thought it was happening as your Plex Home screen was loading all the thumbnails. Now I believe you mean it never connects and you only see that error.
So you get this error only sitting on the Mac that’s running PMS, and it occurs there when you try to use Plex for Mac, the hosted web app, and possibly the bundled app.
I would do this:
- Please restart the Mac.
- Start PMS.
- Wait 3 min
- Start Plex for Mac. Go into Settings → Player → Debug → Debug Level = Enabled
- demonstrate the problem using Plex for Mac
- quit Plex for Mac and retrieve the ~/Library/Logs/Plex/Plex.log file and zip it up.
- switch to a working desktop computer, open Plex and Settings → Troubleshooting → Download Logs to retrieve the PMS logs.
- From what it gave you, zip up only the
Plex Media Server.log - Drop those two zips into your reply here.
Please also confirm whether the username running the player on your mac is the same username that runs PMS.
I have not completed this yet but would like to add one more thing. It seems that if I do a CMD-R right when I get the error, it forces me to go through the login process and then instead of placing me at the top level, takes me directly to the level that I was trying to get to when I got the error. It is like a “right of passage”. I get all of the images displayed at that level and if I select one, I can continue looking at the each detailed image back and forth at that level. But if I back out and return to the level above, it will NOT let me back out any further. BUT, I can click on a new Plex folder on the left and go one level down again. In some cases it allows me to proceed down levels until I get the error again and this starts all over again.
Sorry here it is…

IS there not ANYONE that can help me with this. This is a multi-server, multi-player issue.
Depending on which machine I am on, I can get my various Plex servers to work or NOT work and each of the ones that are not working have different issues. My primary concern is for my Plex Player on my Mac Studio. It is the one that will give me the message above. It is the MAIN computer that I build and display images/videos on. I NEED this to work. So far, the only way I can see what I am putting on the various servers is to go to an older Mac Pro and run the player there. It does NOT seem to have any issues getting into any one of the THREE Plex Media Servers I am using.
@LeviDavis the error you’re seeing trying to look at items in your photos library I think I’m able to reproduce on a QNAP Linux PMS x64 install. I’ve seen a few other people mention this.
Would you confirm this is still happening to you with a Photos library?
Thanks, nib
This would STILL be happening except for the fact that I have resolved it a different way. This is not to say that I wouldn’t mind having it resolved completely, but at least I can now go into any one of the three Plex Media Servers and NOT get this error. I resolved this by find older Plex Players apps. It is different based on the OS that I am having issues with. On the Mac Studio, I found Plex Mac Play version 1.91.0.129, installed it and the issue is gone. Same thing applies to my Windows 11 Pro PC. I found an earlier Player version and it ALSO is working just fine. Like is said, I would really like this to be resolved so that I could move ahead in versions as needed.
Great thanks for the update.
I just set up my Plex server, and got the "something went wrong’ message after doing this:
- wrench (Settings) → Manage (menu on left panel) → Libraries (sub of Manage)
- At my “movies” library, under Manage Recommendations, I turned them all off
- Went to Home screen and found the “something went wrong” message.
FIX: In my case:
- I went back to my “movies” library per above, then hit the Edit Library option, rather than the Manage Recommendations option
- In Edit Library, I chose “Advanced”
- Then I chose the Visibility option “Exclude from Home Screen”
Back at my Home Screen, I saw “Your Home Screen is Currently Empty” instead of the problem message. So, I stumbled into something that worked for me, and hope it helps others.
