Sonic library analysis ~ manual start?

I’m excited to try the new sonic features!

I’ve updated my server, and set the necessary server options per the blog post

My questions are; is there a way to initiate the library analysis manually on an existing media library, or do I have to wait for the maintenance period?

What happens if the scan doesn’t complete within the maintenance period window?

You will need to wait for the maintenance window to start but, can always extend the hours so it starts/ends whenever.

If the scan does not complete within a single window it will resume where it left off when the window opens again

Is there a way to track progress? I have no idea if anything is actually happening right now. Will update the window though.

generally if you scan your music library, the sonic analysis will start afterwards.

as far as the maintenance window interruptions, it will resume from where it left off.

the plex web status drop down should show a running analysis and album count.

you can also monitor the logs, either via plex web > settings console, or downloading, or grep/tail/other log tools. filter for Music: log messages

I am running on a QNAP NAS. I have enabled Analyze audio tracks for sonic features and enabled Sonic Analysis for the Music Library. Under manage library, I clicked analyze. Nothing shows on the Dashboard. Under alerts, I can see see it processing individual albums, It completes in a reasonable time frame. But I do not believe sonic analysis occurred. I added albums to try and trigger the analysis to start. And I have gone a few nights where the scheduled analysis should have occurred. I have downloaded the log (zip) file – contains 150 files. Looking at the com.pleapp.agents.plexmusic.log, I cannot tell if the Sonic Analysis is occurring.

Where can I determine if Sonic Analysis is occurring? Is there a different log to look at?

I am running Version 1.24.0.4930 which is the current version for the QNAP NAS.

Hello,

Thanks for your post. for me the same. Im running Version 1.24.0.4930 on a QNAP NAS and cannot find any status for sonic analysis.

in the dashboard i can see the following CPU trend, but no indication if this is due to sonic analysis or anything else…

To answer my own question. To see status of the Music Analysis do the following:

  • Enabled Plex Media Server debug logging on the settings/general tab.
  • Under manage console, filter by [MusicAnalysis]

Currently at 4.3%, fairly slow, but at least I know it is progressing.

analysis processing will show up in the spinning status icon on Plex Web

high cpu load, as indicated by andi10’s picture is also a good give away.

THanks for the feedback… doesnt work with me, if i filter by MusicAnalysis i see a blank screen. As most times, the problem is for sure in front of the screen and not at the server

Thats it  om plex Web i can see it… thanks a lot…

the plex web requirement is indicated on the new support article

I’m struggling to get this to run at all. I have the following settings

I set the time for maintenance tasks to run between 11:00a and 12:00 and the process didn’t kick off.

I also added a new album to the library and then scanned my library files and it didn’t kick off.

What am I missing?

Which OS, CPU architecture?

@tom80H It’s a Synology 920+ running DSM 6.2.4

Processor is a Celeron 2Ghz x 4 cores.

That machine should support the sonic analysis/features.

You probably need to expand that maintenance slot beyond the currently scheduled 1 hour. Keep in mind the server will still execute its daily chores and should only afterwards start executing the sonic analysis.

I just set it to run from 12:00 to 15:00 (and yes it was set prior to the clock turning over to 12)

Give the server some time to finish its regular jobs. The analysis should kick in at some point during the maintenance slot.

I’m not sure when the maintenance job is queuing it’s tasks (e.g. if this is happening exactly at the start time or if it needs some more notice)… at worst the job should be on the maintenance agenda for tomorrow. Keep in mind this might take quite some time on a Celeron.

So it was supposed to run overnight between 2:00am and 5:00am but I don’t know that anything happened which is why I reset the maintenance to the 11:00am to 12:00am time frame to see if I could see anything. As I type this, the server is completely idle.

I get a little weirdness with sonic scanning behavior - Running on a Windows 10 machine, got about 240GB of music. I had the maintenance window set to 2-5AM, and what’s strange is that I can’t see how far the sonic scanning has gotten so far.

I’ve also been manually triggering scans, and eventually it get started on sonic scanning. At that point, the status message says it’s scanning like 3 or 4 albums. That’s over in about 10 minutes, then I can just keep going through the same routine.

I’m willing to take a server performance hit if I can just get all the music files run through sonic scanning - is there some way I can get that done?

@tom80H I’m still not seeing any evidence of the process running, I’m turning up the logging a bit to see if that gives any insight.
