Sony Bravia DLNA player problem

Server Version#:1.18.1- 1973
Player Version#: DLNA on Sony Bravia
hello guys, i am new to to the DLNA world. Currently i am trying to connect my SONY BRAVIA TV KD-49XF7077 to my plex server. Everything is working perfectly except for .mkv files bigger than 1gb and all .vob (or whatever the actual compelete format is called)
Can someone please help?

With DLNA it’s all about the native media player on your TV.
If it doesn’t like the format (or combination of streams in your files), it won’t play them.

Many people may have the problem about how to play MKV files on Sony TV as Sony Bravia TV only support MPEG format with USB connected. In that cases, if you want to play your MKV movies on Sony Bravia TV, you need to convert MKV to Sony TV supported formats like MPEG-1/MPEG-2/MPEG, and others. This article will tell you the best way to convert and play MKV on TV , including Sony TV, Samsung TV, Apple TV, etc.

About MKV: MKV (Matroska Video) is a free standard container video format, which has a capacity to hold a wide range of video, audio as well as subtitle tracks in one single file. Developed in 1992, this file format is similar to other container formats like AVI, MP4, and ASF when it comes to storing multimedia like video and audio. But what importantly makes it different from other files is that it is entirely open when it comes to the specification. This file format was a part of the first project created for an open media container which facilitates wrapping audio, video, and subtitles in a single file. It is an open source file format and can be stored as a movie or on DVD

That’s actually not correct…at least not that general
When I started my Plex Media Server I’ve had tons of issues (e.g. due to my poor home network connection). Back then I occasionally plugged my MKV files on an USB disk directly to the TV and they played just fine.
That being said… Sony has a very mixed record and it appears while one model might play a file just fine, another model won’t do that.

Maybe this is a more comprehensive support page

alright thank you guys! i guess i will convert them then

I would just buy a streaming device like a chromecast, roku, fire tv or better still one of the new nvidia shield devices, the latter should ensure direct play. No need to convert the files then.

I just wanted to say I’ve managed to get a 16GB 4K .mkv file play flawlessly today over DLNA with (almost) the same TV. I can’t provide any fixes, but thought you might want to know it is possible because I have a very similar Sony TV model (KD-49XE7002), I’ve looked up the differences between models and supposedly the only difference is that yours supports DLNA and mine doesn’t?!? (Which is ridiculous since I’m literally using it!)

For full context, I’m using a Synology DS918+ as my DLNA host. I installed Plex on it from the Synology Store and other than that it’s mostly default settings. The DLNA Profile it is using is the ‘Generic’ one, but it seems to work well so I’m not too concerned it’s not using a settings profile.

Have you tried this again with a new up-to-date version of Plex?
