Sony Bravia / Windows computer: Subtitles showing in random order during playback

Server Version#: 1.41.0.8992-8463ad060
Player Version#: 9.23.0.1746

I have been using Plex on the same Sony Bravia smart tv for years with no issues related to subtitles that couldn’t be fixed with a quick search.

Lately (the last few weeks) we have had serious issues with the subs, however, as they seem to be showing randomly. The issue always starts AFTER the first lines of subtitles. As in if the movie starts off with dialogue right away it will happen sooner, if there is a very long intro without dialogue it will occur once the dialogue starts.

It presents itself like this; the first few lines of subtitles are fine, but then they become random, as in sometimes the subtitles show the correct line of dialogue, and other times it shows a line that either had or should have been shown earlier on. The subtitles never show something that hasn’t occured yet in the playback, but the issue becomes increasingly frustrating as the playback goes on.

The issue resets upon leaving the playback and continuing it from where it was stopped, but the issue reoccurs following the same pattern. The first few lines of dialogue are fine, and then it goes crazy.

Most of my movie files are bought dvd- and bluray discs that have been ripped into MKV-files with subtitles straight from the physical media, but sometimes I use the find subtitle function in the plex media player. The issue is the same for either source of subtitles.

The problem is the same when using the computer for playback, but the biggest concern is with the television, as it is the main unit we use. However, it seems to be an issue with the media server and not the playback unit.

I have tried to find threads from people with similar issues but haven’t found any. Please help direct me in the right direction, if it is already managed elsewhere on the forums.

I am definitely not experienced in using the forums nor troubleshooting issues, as Plex has mostly been plug and play for me. So please guide me to whatever is need to assist with the issue :crossed_fingers:

I have tested quite a few files, and it seems that most if not all mkv-files made from Bluray-rips are showing subtitles just fine.
The issue happens with nearly all files from dvd-rips.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what to try out??
