Sony TV not playing audio for some movies, - not playing at all for others

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3876
Player Version#: 8.11.0.22186

I’m having problems playing movies through my Plex server on my Sony Bravia Android TV. When I try playing a 10-Bit HEVC movie, I get an error saying “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.” Does this mean my TV can’t play 10-Bit HEVC files? Shouldn’t my server transcode it automatically to a format that my TV can play? My PlayStation 4 handles anything I throw at it in regards to video/audio resolutions and codecs.

In addition, I am having issues with audio playback. When streaming through my television, very often I will get no audio at all. Let’s use a 5.1 AC3 audio track for example. If I have HDMI passthrough on, it plays the movie but no audio comes out of my soundbar. If I disable passthrough, the movie never plays. I just get a spinning loading icon. I bought a Shield TV Pro to troubleshoot, and on that I can get audio through my soundbar with HDMI passthrough OFF. If I turn passthrough on, I still get no audio. Any tips here?

Had the same issue yesterday. Unplugged/replugged the TV and Shield.
That seemed to fix it for me.

You’re referring to a full power off -> unplug -> replug -> power on cycle? Interesting, I wouldn’t have thought that would fix an issue like that…

Yes power off/unplug… power on. That worked for me. Glitch?

This didn’t work for me. Any other tips? Is this a bug in PMS?

It has to be a bug.

I think this is a Bravia-specifi Plex issue: H264 movies do not play

I’m seeing the same issue on two Bravia TVs. Plex for Kodi and all other clients (including Android on tablets and phones) are fine.

The issue is that content loads to a blank screen, and stays that way. Sometimes I get an error about the server not being available. Even more rare, the content will sometimes actually play.

I think the issue started about 6 or 7 days ago; we just immediately switched over to good old reliable Plex for Kodi until I had time to investigate the issue. I’ve since rebooted both TVs and even reinstalled the Plex app on one of them; no dice. Also restarted PMS.

Interesting, the audio issue seems to be a recent bug with Sony Bravia TVs as per this GitHub issue: https://github.com/CiNcH83/bravia_atv2/issues/85

What’s the likelihood of Plex instituting a fix/workaround for this? Really wish they had direct support for a PAID product instead of forums.

More evidence of Sony Bravia TV shenanigans.

Same, Bravia tv can’t play one episode that plays fine on tablets, phones and shield. Looks like one of the recent server upgrades might have nuked Bravia TV support.

The message is really not helpful that pops up either, might as well just say “meh”.

I notice a few weeks back that Plex rolled out some transcoding changes, could that be buggy?

I had some issues with 8.11 on my Sony Bravia, it mostly worked, but some encoded files with DTS-MA audio gave me problems (Remuxes where ok)

8.12.2 had all sorts of issues especially with DTS-MA Audio file

The new beta 8.12.3, (in my limited testing) seems to have fixed my issues.

(But fwiw I also manually installed a firmware update to my TV, so I don’t know if that helped as well)

Bump. Just tried watching another movie with DTS sound and it’s still not fixed. Is there any way to force Plex to convert these audio tracks from the Android TV player app?

Go to settings. turn passthough to Optical whether or not you actually have optical. after enabling optical there will be another setting right next to it to choose optical codecs. only enable AC3 there. and that will make it tell the server to convert DTS to AC3 so you at least get surround.

As far as I am aware some Sonys are not correctly reporting it’s capabilities to app.

Hey BigWheel,

Thanks for responding. This seems to have fixed my issue so far. Glad to have a knowledgable Plex employee respond with a solution. I will reply to this thread if I have any more issues with this solution in the next few days. Cheers!
