Sort Title Edits Not Saving / Reverting to Default

Hello,

I have all of my files named as they should be. However, I’m having issues with sort titles automatically reverting back to their defaults on their own.

In this instance we’ll use Star Wars: Attack of the Clones as an example – I have the title of this movie set as described, and the sort title as Star Wars 002. I click save, making sure that the sort title is locked for edits. Everything is good. However, the next 1-2 times I update my library to add new files in, that sort title - even though it’s locked for editing - will revert to Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, for no rhyme or reason.

How can I stop this from happening? It’s beyond frustrating to continually check my sort titles after every single library refresh, especially as my library grows larger and more and more titles are affected.

Thanks in advance!

Public Enemy Number One is poor naming and structuring:
http://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/media-preparation/
Pay particular attention to TV Show Naming and Structuring.

Usage Example:

A Movie Library/
…Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
or
A Movie Library/
…Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)/
…Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002).xxx

FileBot (link in my signature) can handle that for you automatically or manually in seconds.

What FileBot can’t do is remove possible embedded metadata in the Title Field of MP4/M4V files. Plex will read this info and prefer it over a perfect file name/structure, but you can combat that situation by moving Local Media Assets to the bottom of every agent list you can find. All tabs in TV Shows and Movies here:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200241558-Agents
Just drag LMA to the bottom of the list and drop it. If you do have embedded metadata this will cure the issue, if you don’t it won’t matter. LMA will do what it has to from the bottom.

Renaming/restructuring is best performed OUTSIDE the library and you may need to write a new bundle for the show or movie so The Plex Dance® was invented:

The Plex Dance®:

  1. remove show/movie from library
  2. rescan library files
  3. empty trash
  4. clean bundles
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200392106-Library-Actions <— scan library files, empty trash, clean bundles
  5. bring names and structures into compliance/Move LMA/etc
  6. replace corrected show/movie into library
  7. rescan library files

All Steps. In Order. No Shortcuts.

Still No Joy?

Log Files:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/

What’s probably happening is your file is named/structured so poorly - or it’s an MP4/M4V with bogus embedded metadata - and Plex can’t get it matched… but keeps trying… blowing your sort title out of water.

Bring everything into compliance/Move LMA in the case of MP4/M4V files, get that match - and it will stop doing that.

…everything IS in compliance and named correctly, as I stated in the original post. That’s not the issue here.

If your movie is:
Star Wars: Attack of the Clones.xxx
Then naming is the issue because the correct name is:

A Movie Library/
…Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002).xxx
or
A Movie Library/
…Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)/
…Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002).xxx

Clearly shown here:

Here, in painful detail, are the instructions for media preparation:
http://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/media-preparation/

If this movie is an MP4/M4V file and you haven’t moved Local Media Assets out of the top slot in ALL your Agent Lists for TV Shows and Movies - you’ll NEVER get this movie to behave properly - nor will ANY other MP4/M4V file behave properly.

Also, as previously stated - give up some log files:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/
Drag zip file to message window and drop it.

Sorry, I should clarify - the actual name of the file in my system is indeed “Star Wars - Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)”. I was using that as an example and didn’t type the file name word for word. That’s my mistake.

I do also have Local Media Assets removed from the top slot now.

I’ll post the log files tonight after work!

and again (I did remove that bogus “:” that wouldn’t work), but this is the name of the movie:

A Movie Library/
…Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002).xxx
or
A Movie Library/
…Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)/
…Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002).xxx

I never have problems like this because I use FileBot - link in my signature.
FileBot goes to TMDB and gets the name they use.
It’s bulletproof.
Instant Match City (almost) every time.

Now it’s possible that some version of the correct name might work - the log files will reveal all.

I would think that wouldn’t matter. A locked field is a locked field. I think the only thing that would override that is in a case where a movie was matched, then matched again later on.

Plex hasn’t quite figured out that whole locked field thing.
I regularly get locked fields blown out of the water, like when TVDB decides to rename episodes of NOVA, for instance.

If you get a stable, unchanging match - then lock a field - that usually works.
If, for any reason, Plex decides to go looking for a match again that locked field don’t mean a dam thing.

If you’re using MP4/M4V files with bogus Title Fields, you may be able to Fix Match and get one. The next time Plex scans, and reads that bogus Title - it’s over. That thing comes unmatched and there goes your locked field.

That’s definitely the problem I’ve been having.

Okay, log files should be attached to this post.

E:\MOVIES
…Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002).mp4 <---- good name - an MP4 file.

Plex Dance this movie after you move Local Media Assets to the bottom of your active agent lists as described above - then you should be able to lock fields and have them lock.

If you have locked fields coming unglued, they aren’t matching. Either store them in an area that doesn’t require matching (Other Videos) or get them matched.

Not sure if this is the same. But , my plex server, it stopped saving my sort settings for ‘TV shows’ since this client last update. Notice this on the samsung client and the roku. I set it to sort by last episodes added, exit, go back and its sorting by title.

‘.Movie’ sort settings do save.
