In the context of learning about Plex, I keep finding new ways of confusing myself. This is only a small issue but perhaps someone has some advice.
For example, I have several albums for Mozart (I use the Composer as the Artist rather than the Conductor for the Artist with my classical music). Under Mozart, I have several symphonies, for example.
Within the Artists category, they are sorted as 36, 40, 36, 38,39.(40 is out of place)
Within the Albums or Folders, I get 36, 36, 38, 39, 40 (all correctly sorted).
If the Albums and Folders were also mis-sorted I would conclude that I had made a mistake somewhere but it is only incorrect within Artists.
Further to my previous message, I now see that there appears to be a relationship between the
Artist sorting and the specific CD.that is being used. I separate out the individual works on any given CD so, for example, the attached screenshot shows six different works but only two actual CDs.
Under Artists, Plex appears to sort first and foremost by the CD and then the work. Not at all what I want. Interestingly, it only does this with Artists, and not with Albums or Folders.
Here’s a very small subset of my Mozart collection that shows what I’m on about.
If you hover over the albums and then click on the pencil icon, what is in the “Sort Title” field. I find that sometimes there is something there that is different than the title. Maybe that helps.

All show exactly the same up to the symphony number, eg “Symphony No. 40 in G minor: Leonard Bernstein - New York Philharmonic”
I’ve just noticed another example from an album (Mendelsshohn) that has three works on the one CD and they appear on the CD in the order of Symphony No. 3, Symphony No. 4 and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. For my purpose, I have separated these three works into individual ‘albums’ and expected to see them sorted as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Symphony No. 3 and Symphony No. 4.
Unfortunately, they are being shown in Plex Artist sort as Symphony No. 4, Symphony No. 3 and, finally, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. So they are not in alphabetical order and they don’t even accord with the order on the CD. Within the Albums sort, they are being shown correctly.
Any chance that you could help me a little further? This is WAY above my pay grade!
In the advanced settings, I can see a reference to Album sort that I’m guessing is where I should be focussing but I have absolutely no idea where to go with it.
I’ve also had a look at the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.plexapp.plexmediaserver.plist and I cannot find anything there that looks relevant.
That is no longer true.
You can set the album sorting in the properties of your music library, on the ‘Advanced’ tab.
You can even override this ‘global’ setting for every AlbumArtist individually, by editing the Artist.
