"Special" Movies

Hi! So I was going on about this earlier with my husband and I was telling him that there should be an option or feature

on plex (not sure if it's currently possible) which I will try my best to explain.

So let's say I have the pokemon series and those have movies but there is no folder other than the specials folder that

shows up where the seasons are and when you go in since it's a specials folder they show up like episodes instead of

what they are movies...now we do have a movie section where all other movies are but I wanted to have a movie type

section for series like pokemon which have movies to be right there along with it and that when you go into Movies

under the series you are able to see the movie posters like you normally would in the movie section vs as if your were

looking at episodes. I think this would be a great idea to have media organized even further, I will try to do a mock up

of it just to make the idea clearer. Thank You! :3

Here are some visual examples, pardon the lack of beauty on these...

TV Data is provided by the website TheTVDB.com and they are the ones in control for the most part.

The rest of the online community decided (unofficially and a long time ago) that while this might be more aesthetically pleasing to have things like this (Specials, OVA, Movies, Webisodes, etc), it is 100% more confusing on the back end management.

Consider the Following things we get to work with :)

Lost - A Classic TV Show with Seasons and Episodes and is very clear cut.

Dr Who -- It has episodes that are canon, but not part of a season, and if you skip them the show doesn't make sense sometimes (not that it did to me to begin with :P )

Naruto -- it has 220 Episodes, 2 Specials and ~30 Extras that all seem to be considered Cannon (as per AnimDB, never watched the show myself) and in no way resembles the episodic layout of Dr Who or Lost

Sword Art Online -- It has a 2nd Season, it's called "Sword Art Online II" but is considered a different show but part of the same franchise?? It also has some specials that are also not canon but still relevant somehow.

So as a middle ground solution (read: the database people won). TV Shows have Seasons (by cycle, year, or other major division), Episodes that are Cannon, and everything else is part of Season 0 numbered by release date. While not pretty, it makes databasing things easier on the whole for everyone involved :|

Hello and Thank You for responding, while I do understand your point I wasn't looking for a subsection for

everything just for movies per say. I understand that webisodes, ovas, special and such are basically just

specials under plex which is fine but movies are not special and I don't really want to be jumping around if

it can be in one place.

I have all of my movies that are not related to other things under my movie area and those are fine but

I have anime in my collection that have movies, in fact some have many movies like pokemon or naruto
and instead of having to put them separate from where I already have the anime it would be nice if they
could be in the same place have a sub-section like the special do. Maybe the topic could be slightly revisited,
I don't intend to change the whole platform but I thought this would be a very good suggestion.

Thank You for taking the time to read and reply to my post, it's most appreciated. :3

Unfortunately, thats exactly what implementing your suggestion would take. TheTVDB would have to be the first to make this change as they are the ones holding all of the metadata for The Vast Majority of Metadata for things.

----------------

However as AniDB seems to have things broken up than TheTVDB, it may be possible (with a little under the hood of plex help) to use this extra metadata that AniDB has to make more "Named" Season Level Folders. That would actually make this viable for a Custom Metadata Agent (like the one for AniDB). All of the keywords would have to be predetermined and the videos would still need to be setup in a way to be programmatically identifiable without the use of black magic or the sledge hammer.

Interesting....

Maybe I'm not understanding babylinux correctly but it seems that they are just looking for a way to manually add some sort of "link" under a tv section to say a movie collection in there movie section.  I'm thinking they are not actually expecting this to be automated or retrievable info from thetvdb, For instance maybe under the show arrested development I would like to add my own link to a collection of Jason Bateman movies.

This is NOT what I thought this thread was going to be about!

Yes, I definitely thought it was about "special" movies .....

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (tv-series specials if linked on e.g. TheTVDb.com, option to link related content via collections)
