Server Version#: 1.16.3.1402
Player Version#: 2.15 I believe
Was watching ‘Hereafter’ tonight and paused it. When I went to play it again, spinning wheel of death. Went upstairs to my other Apple TV and tried playing the same movie and… spinning wheel of death. Went back downstairs and tried resuming it again and… spinning wheel of death.
All this happened from 10pm’ish until the 10:30pm.
Switched over to Emby on the Apple TV and the movie fired right up so I know it’s not a connection problem on either Apple TV.
I’d love to upgrade but it seems that with every. single. update. there are more than a few folks complaining about some serious problems so I have adopted the mentality that unless it adds some cool feature I want or fixes a problem I’m having, I’d like to stay put.
Not upgrading because it breaks something in your environment - usually means there’s something wrong in your environment you are unwilling to change/repair.
The aircraft is on fire - even after you downgrade -and the flames just keep smoldering away. The pilot reports all is well, but the flight engineer sees only red, flashing lights and a mountain getting larger in the windscreen.
Do you want to be the pilot, or the flight engineer?
(You don’t want to be a passenger - that’s certain)
I don’t agree with that. Look at the people complaining about how newer versions of the server killed hardware transcoding or their ability to remotely connect to their Plex server. To those people, would you honestly tell them that, “hey, I see you complaining about a hardware transcoding problems after updating the server… guess your CPU/GPU always had a problem”.
I’m fully upgraded - that’s what I do.
No ‘server’ issues - but clients do have a few - lucky I too have a few to choose from.
Plex, in general, is working fine.
Experiencing the same issue on version 2.16(14822). If I do a quick rewind 10 seconds or scrub backwards in a movie, I get the spinning wheel of death. If I stay paused long enough for the ATV screen saver to begin and return, I’ll get the spinning wheel of death.
If I wait out the spinning wheel, sometimes I either get a paused frame that’s almost 4:3 with the audio continuing to play in the background or the video will play with the audio muted.
The only way I can fix this is by exiting the movie and resuming from the same spot and trying to rewind again immediately. I love Plex but this makes late night movie viewing much harder.
@sergiou87 Hi there, was just wondering if you had a chance to look into this? If Chuck is around , I am now using an officially supported distro (Debian 10) and the problem continues.
Sorry I totally forgot
I would say the server is generating a bad transcoding session:

Have you tried enabling the enhanced video player? (By going to Settings → Advanced and disabling Old Video Player, if you have the latest version of the app)
I am seeing something very similar on Android TV (Nvidia Shield). I will play a movie, pause and when I come back if the screen saver has kicked in it will go back to the movie info screen where I can see it has played some of the file in the timeline. I resume the movie and get the spinning wheel of death.
At this stage I can press stop but the timeline has now reverted back to zero. I play the movie it starts at the beginning. If I am lucky I can go to the Plex Home screen and it will appear in the now watching section with the right amount already played and can resume. However this does not happen everytime and sometimes I just have to scrub through the movie to get back to where I was.
