I have several different versions of some movies. On Plex, I have them split with unique names and posters for easy selection.
Due to dwindling hard drive space on the HDD they reside on, I want to move several of the libraries to another drive.
I think most know how to do this without losing manually added movie posters and whatnot, but I’ll reiterate it here.
- COPY the entire folder with your videos into the new location.
- Turn off auto emptying of the trash in Plex.
- Edit the library to include the new folder location.
- Wait while Plex automatically scans for new media, and shows that every movie has a duplicate.
- Edit the library to remove the old folder location.
- Empty the trash.
- (Optional) Delete the original folder from the old location on your HDD.
This works fine and dandy UNLESS you have multiple versions of movies that have been “Split apart” in Plex.
When performing the steps above with movies that have been split apart in your library, Plex shows a number in the upper left corner of only the first movie title after step 4, then removes the previous split apart titles after step 5 requiring you to split them apart again, view the info on each to find which version they are, rename their Title field, and choose the poster and background again, as well as set up audio and subtitles selections. Basically everything one would have to do with any new file added to the library.
I’m sure Split apart data is something within the metadata that Plex creates and stores for the file when it was originally split apart, and that meta data is not created/copied when the new location is added, and therefore does not exist for it, so when the original location is removed, that metadata is deleted, but there is no opportunity for the user to use the split apart function to create that data, because the titles already appear to be split apart for the user.
Is there a workaround that I’m missing? I found this topic with 0 replies asking for such an option 3.5 years ago. Preserve library metadata while splitting server
