Srt external subtitles not working

Hello

.Srt external subtitles not showing up when playing media on any platform I tried (chrome, nvvidia shield pro, mobile android app and samsung tv plex app).

And just 24h ago all was ok…

Anyone with this issue?
What’s happening?

I don’t know of any reason subs would work one week, but not the next. I don’t use external subs myself (so feel free to ignore my post) so I have no experience. I’ll try something out after I post here.

Do you have any media that worked last week still around? So we can find out if this issue is only for “new” media and their subs, new subtitles on existing media, or for ALL external subs for ALL media, old and new.

And - of course - the obligatory “Are you doing it right” questions:

  • Check the filenames. If you are confident you are doing it correct, could you provide the name of the media and the name of the subtitle file so we can double-check/try it out?
  • After adding the subtitle, did you do “Refresh Metadata” and/or “Analyze” on the media? I am drawing a blank right now on which one is required for external files/subs, so I’d recommend you do both.
  • Lastly, does the media in a browser indicate that there are subtitles, but that they are not selected? Or does it indicate that there are None subtitles? The former is your clients not auto-selecting the media, the latter is an issue of the server not seeing the subtitle.

EDIT: Just tested out. Added a movie, with a subtitle file I had. Server picked it up, and detected the subtitle file automatically, though it was disabled due to my language/subtitle preferences. After enabling and viewing, subtitle displayed at proper time, so appears to be working.
Server: Ubuntu docker image

  • Version 1.41.6.9685

Client: Chrome

  • Version: web client

Hey friend, judging by your name you are a latin speaker, am I right? Portuguese or Spanish? Looks like the new Plex app is having issues with accents on those languages with SRT subtitles. Hey @Craig_Holliday another one needing your help with this!

Hi there

Same files, mkv and external srt (with same file names), worked properly yesterday, and not today…

I changed absolutely nothing on settings.

Also tried to refresh metadata first. And afterwards, since it isn’t working still Iremoved the library and made a new one. Also woth no results.

Hi

Portuguese here.
The issue is that yesterday, I had no issue with several mkv + external srt subtitles in portuguese.

And today no exterbal srt works.

No settings changed…

Hey! Have you updated to the new Plex app? Another user suggested converting the SRTs to UTF-8 encoding and that made the trick for me. Its easy to do, just open the SRT file with a notepad > save as.. > change the codec to UTF-8. Try and see if it works. If it does, I can help you batch convert everything to UTF-8 with a free software.

Hi

So the files were already in UTF-8.
I changed the fomart, and then back again to UTF-8 and it worked!
Still strange that the same files worked the day before and were originally in UTF-8…

Can you then please share a way to do this in mass please?

Thanks

There can be still a difference: there is “UTF-8 with BOM” and “UTF-8 without BOM”.
Your back-and-forth conversion might have changed the presence of the byte-order-marker (BOM).

If you have a Windows computer, open the SRT file with notepad.exe
The encoding and whether it has a BOM is shown in the lower, right corner.
Subtitle Edit will also show that information. (It also has a batch converter which allows you to treat many files at once.)

Ideally, compare the presence of the BOM in the original file, with the file you converted. Maybe there is a difference in what the new app can/cannot handle.

@pedrofilipegonalves this is the software I was going to recommend you. Really simple to use. Just select tools > Batch convert > select the folder where everything is > hit scan and add the configs you want. It even allows you to save each file on it’s original folder, so it’s quite a easy job to do.

Many thanks @OttoKerner and @gsalless

Did you find out what the difference between the working and the non-working subtitles is?
