Subtitles - New issue

I have recently experienced issues with subtitles. For example, now I have an episode of Westworld (mkv) and the srt subtitle in Swedish is not recognized at all. (It works fine when I run another third party player like VLC). This seems to be a new problem.

As you can see in the enclosed screen capture, the Swedish srt file is not showing at all. It is named exactly as the movie file but with ending *.Swe.srt (I have also tried it without “Swe” but is is not recognized either). The screen capture is from running Plex on a PC but it is not working on my Samsung TV either.

Anyone else had the same issue?

Thanks.

Andreas

Forgot to add; I have the latest PMS update running on a Synology server.

had the exact same issue when i ran QNAP as a PMS. Try to open the srt and save it in UTF. For some reason that matters in the Linux world and it took me a year to figure out…

There are plugins to PMS that scans for srt:s and change them to UTF if they are not…

Thanks Moje1977,

Unfortunately this did not work. I changed it to UTF but no luck. It does not work. I also added another srt file to the folder but this one is not showing either. It seems the only subtitle showing is the one that is (probably?) already placed in the MKV file (otherwise these two added subtitle files would have shown up as “srt external” in Plex. Could it be that the MKV is the issue - I do not remember having these issues previously with MKVs?

As said earlier, I have no problem accessing these subtitles in VLC player or any other media player.

I have numerous other files that work flawlessly in Plex with external subtitles.

What information do you get from the file info.

Does it show all the subs available?
Also note, I’ve seen people talk about permissions needing to be set…

Nope. The only thing showing under subtitles is the one which apparently is “contained” in the mkv I guess. Neither of the two external subs I have are identified nor shown.

If you would/can move the movie and all ext subtitles out of your library then update library/empty trash/ then add it back. update your library and see if it’s picked up.

Actually i get this now too. Been messing with TVDB agent since it doesnt add posters and metadata for all my shows. Tried briefly with The Movie Database and then i got posters and metadata. HOWEVER! No external .srts where added and available for me in PMS/Player if the show was identified with The Movie Database. Very strange…

I deleted my library and set it up again and now i get SOME posters but for those unidentified it looks like this:

but inside the show i get the subs:

Is TVDB the issue here together with PMS not identifying the metadata??

For external subtitles, you need the ‘Local Media Assets’ agent to be active under
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

Not strange at all. There are separate settings for both TheTVDB and TheMovieDatabase. Ergo, you go to
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
and enable ‘Local Media Assets’ there too.

Thanks for the clarification @OttoKerner Will try that soon if TVDB doesnt get back online soon.

But is the same true for OpenSubtitles? I dont have Local Media Assets selected now (and never have been) and still external srt:s are available…Just trying to figure out how it works (or should work).

??? Is something down?

This I don’t know. I have never used the opensubtitle agent because it never fits good enough for my taste.

My explanations above apply to subtitle files which are stored beside the video file.

Yes it seems so. Have had issues with metadata and posters for TV Shows for some time. Today i removed my library and added again and this is the result using TVDB (again):

Issue seems to be the same as described here from september:

OK. solved this one. The issue with posters and metadata. Looks like the language selected in the library was the reason. Originally set to Swedish but after changing to English all poster and metadata (incl. subs) are recognized.
