I don’t actually see this as a bug, I, just don’t understand it.
When casting a MKV to my chromecast it uses direct play if I don’t have subtitles enabled. If I enable PGS subtitles that are embedded in the MKV transcoding is enabled.
If I on the other hand choose SRT subtitles that are external of the MKV file (I havn’t tried embedding yet) transcoding is not happening, but instead direct play. But I still get my subtitles.
Does chromecast support SRT subtitles?
Furthermore, The subtitles follows the settings of the phone that sets up the casting. So in my case the color of the subtitles turns yellow with SRT, but are the standard white with PGS.
Is there a speicific feature of Plex that I don’t know of?
If this is supported behaviour, I’ll start putting SRTs next to my movies, as I’ll then be able to cast to my chromecast with original quality while at the same time getting subtitles.
My other option for this would have been to optimize all of my movies so they’re only transcoded once, and not every time I cast a movie to my chromecasts.
