SSD MacBook Pro vs HDD iMac

Hey all,

First time here so hopefully this is in the right place.

I’ve been running PMS on a 2010 iMac with a 2.9ghz quad core processor and 12GB of ram with dedicated graphics card for a while. It has a 7200rpm HDD inside. It is running Mac OS 10.13

The computer is getting a bit slow and I’m worried some of the plex server slowdown I’ve seen intermittently is related.

My media is stored on drives connected via USB 2.0.

I recently was able to retire a 2013 MacBook Pro 13” with a 3.0ghz dual core i7 which uses integrated graphics, 8GB RAM and a 512 SSD. It is running Mac OS 10.15

I’m trying to buy myself some time before I am ready to purchase my next iMac later this year and was wondering if, between these two machines, which makes the most sense to run the server from. As the media won’t be stored on the SSD, will it improve any of the performance?

Any advice would be great and sorry again if this post is in the wrong spot!

You will probably see a performance increase - would depend on the encoding method of your files and the Core i7 Generation.

Also remember that SSDs have limited life expectancy (if you do a lot of ADD/DELETE of your files). Depending on the version of MAC OS - Trim on the SSD may not be supported (or enabled).

I have both a USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ext HDD attached to my PLEX Server, and I am not having any problems streaming from either of them.
