SSDP

Plex use GDM, and not sure here, but seems like it's a Plex only thingy?

(Own port number etc.)

And now it also seems like Bonjour is a dead end for Plex.

So I humbly suggest, that Plex consider to advertise the PMS (And maybe even clients) via SSDP

Reason for asking is simple.....Samsung doesn't allow access to the NIC in their Smart devices, but it does support SSDP on the newer models.

And I bet other vendors of HW out there is looking into this as well, since it seems to me at least like an emerging technology

Guess there's more as well, just picked the top clients for Plex, as I see them, but in random order

And here's a GITHub project in Python regarding this:

Tommy - could you explain the technicalities. This post by Max suggests that PMS already uses SSDP

For DNLA only......So it would, IMHO, be very easy for Plex to reuse this as well to advertise the native Plex client

(That AFAIK isn't using this, but instead GDM)

But not been into this, but here's my thoughts.....

The SSDP is a std. advertising service, and no idea about what in the broadcast identifies a service as DNLA, but do know, that Plex can register their own "call-sign" that native clients in return then can use

Thanks for the clarification. This is a bit about Microsoft use of SSDP for Windows Media Connect. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa456291.aspx

Cool...One more argument ;)

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (I think… based on what I’ve seen in logs)
