Display single file multi episode shows in a single item

a way to have Plex display single file multi episode shows in a single item, ex: episode name, Episode 1-2, instead of duplicating it in the display and playing the full file twice. Instead of having to split the files, or only having one of the episodes in the file name, making it seem like im missing something.

also: ability to show multi part movies in a way that makes sense, like part 1 and 2 under the same Title, instead of showing it as if there was a duplicate movie.

You can already do that. If you follow the official naming schema for multi-file items, they will show up as on item (not different versions of the same episode).
That being said:

  1. the same restrictions as for multi-file Movies apply (e.g. naming schema, same stream types / order, no more than 8 files…)
  2. Not all clients support multi-file items

Therefore… when it comes to multi-file items you’re almost always better off if you merge the files (e.g. using MKVToolNix to maintain the original quality etc.)

where can i find this “official naming schema” cause all conventions i tried show multiple episodes, except when i name it as a single episode, which makes it seem like it is missing episodes.

if you mean : /TV Shows/ShowName/Season 02/ShowName – s02e17-e18 – Optional_Info.ext
my episodes are named as such, and they still show as separate episodes even though they are the same file

My remark was only about the „episodes split across multiple files“ part of your suggestion:

After correcting those names you’ll have to perform a „Plex Dance“ in order to make Plex ignore the already cached information about those particular files.

The s02e17-e18 pattern is used for multiple episodes in the same file.
I fully get what you want to achieve for those and consider it a good idea.

just done it gain, using “S00E10-E19” done the dance, nothing. i have a single file that spans 10 episodes(mini webisodes on the special season) showing up as 10 different episodes on plex.

I didn’t say that’d change. Your feature suggestion still stands and remains valid.
The comments were about the handling of 1 episode or 1 movie split across multiple files (as per the „also“ in your OP)

Just for the sake of clarity for others that may see this I believe you are asking to have multiepisode files look like this mock i just made. pretty sure there was already a feature request for this but I cannot find it.

Obviously this is not pretty just wanted to get the idea across.

Yes, I’d like to see this too. I’m running into the same thing with The Good Place. The first two episodes aired together and are combined on the disc. It would be nice if it was shown as “Everything is Fine / Flying” and just played once. If I name the file S01E01-E02 then what’s happening is there’s two icons but then it plays both episodes and then plays the same file again for episode 2. So If you let it autoplay the series you would see Ep1, Ep2, Ep1, Ep2, Ep3, Ep4. I can split the file, but then it ends the video a bit abrupt and there’s no end credits for that episode obviously. I’d much prefer if it was treated as one icon and one episode and just combined the titles and episode numbers from thetvdb.com

yes to the mock example. and i understand that your reply was about the splitting part @tom80H. was a bit confused at first when you said it was already working. sometimes you get a movie that is so old and hard to find and it is split into parts. Tell you the truth i still don’t know how to make plex understand it is part 1 and 2. the “feature request” was more about the multiple episodes in one file. I think it is a more common nuisance than having multipart movies.

found the info on how to have multipart movies be recognized. but then again that was not my main concern here. thanks anyway, and guys please vote up on this!!!

Has this even been fixed??

edit: I thought 1.31.1.6716 fixed this issue. It does not.

Bump.

Whatever happened to this? Having this same issue with a few seasons. 2 part episodes were combined into 1 file.

Naming the file: SHOW SxxExx-Exy - TITLE causes both episodes to get entered into Plex, which is fine but during autoplay the combined file gets played twice (once for each episode) which is redundant.

First, I saw this had 20 votes, and I voted for it - my first issue vote, and it still has only 20 votes. (Yes, I refreshed the page.) So does my vote not count?

I’m running into this as well and it’s frustrating. I use some of the old Saturday morning cartoons for stress relief and many of them have 2-3 stories or “episodes” per episode. For instance, “Space Ghost and Dino Boy” has 3 stories in each episode, one with Space Ghost, one with Dino Boy, and a lost one with Space Ghost. So that’s one episode, but the DBs all classify it as 3 episodes. When it shows up in Plex, I get three listings of the same file. It would be one thing if, somehow, Plex could figure out where the extra episodes in the file started, but that’d be a major undertaking to do that! (And if they did - well, I’d still rather it list each file just once, even if it somehow added all 3 titles in the display.)

It would be a lot easier to deal with if it listed multi-story episodes as only one episode and not list it multiple times.

It did count. Maybe some other user have transferred their vote to another suggestion.

That’d have had to have happened within a 30 second time frame to have it change between when I loaded the page and when I voted.

Is there any updates on this?

Thank you @BigWheel for the mockup.
I am pretty much for this feature request though my votes are all blocked by other requests.

As the other view (episode is episode, no matter how many files) is more in line with the “w show TV shows, then we show seasons, then we show episodes” general idea of Plex… I would suggest implementing it as an alternative view per library or per TV show.

I would also suggest to leave the episode count for watched status (only adding or reducing the actual numbers of episodes, f.e. 2 for …S01E01-E02).

Advantages of this view:

  • reduces clutter for generated thumbnails (at the moment, all episodes have the same preview image if Plex generates them). It just looks ugly if you see three episodes of a TV show using th same preview image.
  • this view makes it more visible to users that they will be playing multiple episodes at once
  • length of video is in line with the info on which episode(s) that is

The detail view of these multiple episodes could easily be the combined description for both (all) episodes.

It will probably mean a bit of investigation if all counting processes (next episode, number of watched episodes, etc) are working okay.

But I like the idea.

Please go for an option for this.
