So, I rebooted my PMS box last night and this morning “Start from beginning” was an option again. I’ll monitor the situation to see how long this lasts until it only goes directly to live again.
I am somewhat new to Plex. Could please you explain where the setting is to disable the streaming brain? I am running Plex Version 1.14.1.5488 on a Sonology DS918+ and using the Plex app on Roku.
Also there was mention of a setting to keep the entire contents of programs currently being recorded or played in the live seek buffer but I cannot find that either. Where is that setting located?
It seems like I am having the same issue-I set a show to record and then when I pull up the shows on the Roku I cannot watch it from the beginning while it is recording because it does not show up.
Same deal as jwtesq. Somethings we can play a recording while it’s airing, sometimes can’t play at all, and others it starts playing part way through and you can’t get back to the beginning. Is there a fix? Seems this is an ongoing bug with no resolution from what I browsed above.
On roku tonight, sometimes I don’t even see the recording show in the guide, sometimes I do but when I click play it times out and says live tv playback could not be started. On my android phone I see a play icon but it and it just says an error has occurred, try again later. In chrome on my phone I’m able to see it and play it.
Looking at the web client it seems there are a bunch of sessions, though none are working… Can’t seem to attach my screenshot.
Ditto, I have PMS on a Mac mini and am using the Apple TV player. Current PMS version 1.14.1.5488 will not allow me to watch a currently recording program from the start. It does not even give me the option. Takes a few seconds and then starts showing the program at the current live point. No ability to rewind to the beginning either. The prior PMS version WAS working for me.
Needless to say, the spousal acceptance factor dropped significantly!
Last update from a Plex team member was in December. Any update on a fix?
Same issue here. Just got Plex a few months ago and this issue really makes it undesirable, especially from the wife. We like to record shows and then start them 15-30 minutes in to avoid any commercials, and with this bug, we lose all parts of the recording if the bug shows up, which it almost always does. Totally defeats the purpose of recording the show.
Using PMS on a Fedora 29 Linux box. Being able to watch a show in progress worked fine for me up until about 6 weeks ago or so. Not sure just what version it broke in, but it sure is annoying. I record sports and news programs that I wish to start watching before they’re complete. Used to work fine and now it doesn’t.
Use Apple TV and iOS as my clients.
I’ll click Start from Beginning (might not have the wording exact), and it will show a gray screen for a second or two and then go back to the program’s page.
Lately, the “Watch from start” doesn’t even show up for a program that is in progress. I hope Plex is seriously considering redesigning the entire “Live TV” interface as it is slow, buggy, and not very user friendly…at least on the Nvidia Shield TV.
An issue has been raised for Plex Media Server relating to watch from start.
I cannot say if everyone’s problem is down to this or if there are any specific issues with some Plex client apps
I am aware that the watch from start option would not be presented if you are very close to the start
If there are any logs from the client and server and screenshots, I will add to the issue that has been referred to the development team

I’m having the same problem with Roku (all 3 version) and Nvidia shield client.
Everything was working great before.
I have the problem with all kind of live tv recordings ( 30 minutes show or longer) even when it’s not near the beginning of the recording.
Could you give me specific instructions on which log you want us to provide ? From the client or the server ?
I don’t have the option to start from the start anymore so I don’t know what I can do to trigger something relevant on the logs
Run server with debug logging enabled
See https://support.plex.tv/articles/201643703-reporting-issues-with-plex-media-server/
Enable network logging on the roku app
See https://support.plex.tv/articles/201377603-roku-logs/
10 minutes into a recording try to see if you get the option from watch from beginning on the roku
Note down the time when attempted
Get a photo of the screen of what you get
Capture server logs zip
See https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/
and provide account info / times so that network log can be located for the roku
(Note that network logging lasts only for 20 minutes after it is enabled)
On Apple TV using the Plex app, I don’t see an option to play a recording from the start while the recording is in progress even if it is say half way through. Should I see this option?
Thanks
I activated the log on my roku client at 19:18.
I previously had channel 2.1 recording.
At 19:28, I tried to play from the start. I didn’t have the option. It went straight to live tv on that channel.
Thank you for your report. I am reffering it to the development team. Suspect a server issue affecting both Apple TV and Roku
I have not been able to locate the roku network logging. I willl check the server log for the account used and search again
Hi, fyi
I have the same issue with shield client
Let me know if you want me to provide another log
At this moment, the bug is suspected to be at the server end. I will let you know if i need any more information
I did some tests this morning. With the latest server update, it seems to work now. Will do more tests this weekend
Hi Folks, I’ve had this issue as well - watch from start didn’t present as an option at all, I’m running plex server on the nvidia shield. Disappointed if I can’t get DVR functionality working well.
