Status of "100% complete" recording bug

If anyone can reliably get this to happen, can you send me a DM? I’d love to get to the bottom of this one.

@DaveBinM I may have just come across one cause of this problem. I’d never seen it before but had a recording showing 100% complete today and stuck in the grab folder. It was also only a few minutes long. I had recently enabled updating the program guide multiple times a day, and I believe what happened was it updated just after this recording started and in doing so removed it from the schedule (as it shouldn’t actually have been there, it was incorrectly flagged as a new episode prior to the guide update). So I speculate that Plex then aborted the recording but didn’t do so cleanly. May be unrelated to the other instances of this but possibly a data point.

@lennier76 Thanks! I don’t suppose you happen to have logs of when this occurred?

@DaveBinM no sorry, it was all post the fact and I’d restarted Plex etc. Just happened to notice this thread about similar things afterwards.

@DaveBinM, maybe I have logs that would help. I am testing a new antenna (a certain channel did not show up with previous antenna), I did a sample recording with 10 minutes left in the program. Not sure if the guide updated at the hour, but the recording is stuck. Attached are the logs.

I disabled the frequent guide update and will restart the server to clear the stuck program. Will try another recording on that channel and see if the problem is resolved.

@DaveBinM Here are some more logs where the bug just occurred. Two shows recording at once with the “CONVERT VIDEO WHILE RECORDING” option on in the Live TV/DVR section. Recording continues beyond the 100% mark. Please see screen shot of the two shows below:

there is a sort of fix for people who have an ssd as I belive its a drive thrashing issue with it how writes a file every second to the drive you can set the transcoder directory to the ssd here settings->server>transcoder->Transcoder temporary directory.
fixed it for me and a few others but some still have the issue with mec and hybrid drives. which would explain why the 1.6.1 version works for everyone as it only writes 1 file not 100’s for tiny ones.

That’s a very interesting fix. Do you think this would also work if I were use a large enough flash/thumb drive at the temporary directory?

if it was a usb3 drive on a usb 3 port with a fast enough read write speed it might. a fast sd card might be better but then most readers are not as fast as they could be like in slr cameras. worth a shot if you already have one laying around.

@nicksphone0161 Unfortunately, my PMS is an older Mac Mini and the best I have is USB 2.0, FireWire 800, or Thunderbolt and as best I can tell I’m only going to find a USB flash drive. Just trying to thing a a workaround with out breaking the bank…

give it a shot its only time your wasting if you already have a usb drive laying around.

@hf995 did you try it?

My PMS lives offsite. I’ll pay it a visit on Sunday and report back.

@nicksphone0161 While the UBS 2.0 Thumb Drive preformed just fine for on-the-fly transcoding of pre-recorded files, the same 100% complete recording issue was still happening while recording shows with trancoding on. The first one or two shows would “finish” about 15min after the airing and then after that all subsequent show got “stuck.”

best bet is to downgrade then till they fix it to 1.6.1 if your using hdhomeruns

please check out this thread and vote in the poll maybe this will get attention.

I was/am also having this issue even with 1.9.0 upgrade. Out of frustration I decided to fully delete (for windows 10) PLEX along with all meta data, reboot and fully reinstall per https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201941078?mobile_site=true. After reinstalling 1.9.0., I rebooted and reloaded all libraries. So far, I recorded 6-8 items successfully. I will record for the next few days and let you all know if this truly fixed my problems.

**Update: still recording ok for Day 2, no problems after the reinstall.

@DaveBinM I’m having this occur as well. Logs attached, two recordings last night, The Vietnam War on PBS and the Emmy Awards Show. Vietnam successfully completed, but the Emmys is still stuck at 100% recording the next morning.

UPDATE*******

Just got home and see that the recording of the Emmys “completed” at some point while I was gone during the day. Not sure when it happened, but I’m attaching the new logs here as well, that way you have a before and an after to compare. Wonder if it’s getting hung up on something arbitrary.

Hmmm. I’ll have a look. This issue is proving particularly difficult to track down.
