I am using the nVidia Shield TV device, model P2897 ver. 9; Shield Software 8.0.1 (32.5.205.75)
This will be another try to get PMS working on my Shield. All my media libraries, which include movies, TV shows, music and Home Videos are located on a network attached 10TB Synology Diskstation, which is about 4/5 full.
In the past, the server software on the Shield has worked up to a point, until the metadata begins to accumulate and the dreaded “out of space” warning pops up on the Shield. It does not take long. Last year’s PMS update supposedly corrected that issue, but not for me. Even after adding a 128GB SSD drive as adaptive storage, the message still came. I now have a 240GB SSD and hope it will do the trick.
What I have not done in the past is change the default data storage folder for PMS to the larger drive. It does not seem to be a requirement, but I am guessing this is what has done me in before. This is the link I found with instructions how to accomplish this step: https://support.plex.tv/articles/moving-server-data-storage-location-on-nvidia-shield/
Where do these instructions figure into the decision of whether to set up the SSD as adaptive storage? That does not seem to mentioned as an option in deciding where to store the data: it is either in internal storage or on the USB drive, and adaptive is not mentioned.
I want to get it right this time, and would appreciate further guidance and comments.
Basically Adaptive storage takes the drive, encrypts it and used that as your main storage basically turning your 16GB to 240GB SSD. That’s all it really does and really doesn’t anything do with your Plex (so to speak). The only think I don’t 100% is that even tho you select this, does plex still use the 16GB for some reason or do you just need to go into Plex (in the client) and set it to that.
In your case, I suggest just setting this up for Plex and just using it as removable storage and then go into Plex and set it to use that. If your are not going to do anything that is going to take up the base of the 16GB (doing shield stuff) then I would separate out your plex data. This will also give you access to your plex data for backup if need be.
This is my suggestion and other might want to chime in.
P.S. I have a testing shield and am going to set up adaptive storage and see what Plex shows me. Give me 10 Min.
I am inclined to do just that: set up the data storage exclusively on the SSD, after setting it up as removable storage. I am not very worried about backing up the Plex data at this point, as I have PMS working nicely on an Intel NUC, running Windows 10.
I am curious to see what you run into testing the Shield as adaptive storage. One would think that possibly setting up the SSD as adaptive storage and changing from the default (non-user accessible system location) for storage would also do the trick. However, given the problems some have had in doing this, I am skeptical, as you are, that this would work. Not that I would’t like to see it work!
Just did my test and here is what I saw. Once I removed my removable storage and set it to Adaptive, it copied over all my apps. When I go under storage, it shows my 16GB as well as my 64GB flash drive under internal storage.
Now when I went into Plex, I only have 2 options. Use as internal storage or still internal storage but User accessible. I assume it’s going to do just that and place the database/metadata on the SSD drive for you and you should have the space you need to run a plex server.
I felt like this was still an issue awhile back to where you would create the adaptive storage but for some reason it still only and always placed your database/metadata on the 16GB storage instead of the bigger SSD drive. However, I am pretty sure this was fixed 3 to 4 large builds ago.
